It’s almost a given for horror fans to compare their favorite movies/shows. But, no one expected Alex Garland, the writer of28 Days Later, to compare his own movie to HBO’s hitThe Last of Usseries. Not only did Garland pit the two franchises against each other, he actually thinks the video game adaptation is better. Both IPs are gearing up for their next releases, with28 Years Laterreleasing on Jun. 20, andThe Last of UsSeason 2 premiering on HBO on Apr. 13.

During an interview withThe Last of Usvideo game’s creator Neil Druckmann for Sony, Garland discussed the similarities and comparisons between both zombie franchises.28 Days Lateris one of the most lauded zombie moviesof all time, but Garland admitted thatThe Last of Usis that much better than his own movie. “Let me say this:The Last of Usis better than28 Days [Later],” he revealed. Garland wasn’t comparing the overall movie with the entire show, but he did admit that the writing onThe Last of Usis better than his own work on28 Days Laterback in 2002. He continued:

Pedro Pascal as Joel in The Last of Us Season 2

“The Last of Us is better than 28 Days, or at least the writing is. I’m not going to talk about directing. That would be a silly thing. So not that. The thing about The Last of Us, I was like, ‘Oh, this is so much more sophisticated and moving.’ It was moving. I’m not dissing 28 Days. I’m very proud of it. It’s a nice part of my life. But seriously, The Last of Us is on another level. So yeah, of course I was influenced by it.”

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Official Trailer Promises Another Emotional Thrill Ride That Will Shock Audiences

HBO has finally unleashed the official trailer for the second season of ‘The Last of Us.’

Unsurprisingly, the praise went both ways, as Druckmann then said that28 Days Laterwas a direct influence onThe Last of Us. “There’s a direct line between the fast infected and the infected inThe Last of Us,” Druckmann said. As well as turning Cillian Murphy into a household name,28 Days Lateralso introduced the horrifying rage zombieswhich sprinted towards people at full speed. These have since become a staple of the genre, including inThe Last of Us.
