2016 has been a hard year, and over the past several months, quite a few iconic celebrities have saidgood-bye. Today, theGhostbustersfamily has lost one of their own as the sad news was announced that Alice Drummond haspassed away. She was 88 at the time of her death.

A veteran stage actress, Alice is perhaps best known as Alice the librarian in the original 1984Ghostbusters. Though she only had a very small part, her scene kicks off what would become one of the most iconic movies of that generation. And she is a fan-favorite, getting the movie off to a rousing start as she comes face-to-face with the movie’s first terrifying ghost.

Drummond reportedlydiedat her home in the Bronx, New York, this past Wednesday. She succumbed to complications that result from a fall she had survived over two months ago. The news was reported by theNew York Times. No further details are available.

Alice Drummond is also known for her memorable role starring opposite Robin Williams in Awakenings, which hit theaters back in 1990. The actress is a native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. She graduated from Pembroke College in 1950, which at the time had merged with Brown University. She got her first big acting break on the small screen. In 1967, she landed a key role in the ABC vampire soap operaDark Shadows. She would go onto appear in a number of other soap operas during her career, including CBS’Where the Heart IsandAs the World Turns, the later in which she had a recurring story arc.

For four decades she would enjoy a healthy career as a character actress. She was also a veteran of the stage. She was featured in over a dozen Broadway shows. These included The Chinese and Dr. Fish, in which she earned her first Tony nomination as a featured actress in a play. The nom arrived in 1970. Then, in 1976, she was nominated for a drama desk award for her performance in A Memory of Two Mondays / 27 Wagons Full of Cotton.

But it was her quick cameo inGhostbustersthat fans will likely remember most. She got to run screaming from flying books, only to later be interrogated by Bill Murray in one of the movie’s funniest moments. But she has appeared in quite a few memorable roles in movies over the years, making her big screen debut alongside the iconic Ruth Gordon in 1972’s Where’s Poppa?

She also had memorable roles inTales From the Darkside: The Movieand appeared opposite John Cusack inMoney for Nothingback in 1993. She would go onto appear with Jim Carrey inAce Ventura: Pet Detectiveand Meg Ryan inI.Q., as well as Patrick Swayze inTo Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. She had a role in 2008’s acclaimed dramaDoubt, with her latest prominent role coming alongside Brendan Fraser and Brooke Shields in Furry Vengeance.Alice Drummondis notsurvivedby any immediate family members.
