Following Amazon’s surprise (and concerning) takeover of theJames Bondfranchise, each day since seems to be bringing with it some exciting new information. Now, while we await confirmation of which actor will be chosen as the next 007, it seems that a multi-Oscar-winning filmmaker has now revealed he is in talks to take the reins of the reboot as director.
During a recent appearance at the Paris Cinéma Club,GravityandChildren of MendirectorAlfonso Cuarónconfirmed (though coyly) that he is in talks to helm Amazon’s James Bond reboot. Coming courtesy of X/Twitter user @Simon___Robert, Cuarón, who has won several Academy Awards, among others, for the sci-fi thrillerGravityand the historical dramaRoma, as well asreceiving acclaim for the likes ofY Tu Mamá También, Children of Men, and more, heavily alluded to his potential involvement, saying:

Former Amazon MGM Boss' Terrible Plans For ‘James Bond’ Reportedly Made Barbara Broccoli’s Eyes Water
The ‘James Bond’ franchise was reportedly set to be sanitized by outgoing Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Stalke.
“There is indeed this project under discussion, and I have a desire — if it happens — to revisit this story in my own way.”

Amazon’s James Bond Reboot Will Reportedly Center on a Young 007
Alfonso Cuarón has been rumored for the role of James Bond director before, and considering his involvement in theHarry Potterfranchise, having directed 2004’sHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and theappointment ofGravityandHarry PotterproducerDavid Heyman as creative lead alongsideSpider-Manfranchise producer Amy Pascal, it makes sense that Cuarón would be at the top of the list.
Known for his stunning visuals, long takes, meticulous storytelling, and often dark, heavy themes, Cuarón being in the conversation could offer some idea of what Amazon is planning with the 007 reboot. At the recent CinemaCon event, Amazon MGM Studios revealed that they “are committed to honoring the legacy of this iconic character, while bringing a fresh, exhilarating new chapter to audiences around the world alongside Amy and David,” revealing that the producing duo are now “both in London getting started.”

However, Cuarón possibly taking on the daunting task of leading James Bond into his next era somewhat goes against other rumors that have been making the rounds recently. Most notably that the character will return tomore-lighthearted adventures with quips and gadgets, thus leaving the darker and grittier world of Daniel Craig’s James Bond behind. Further rumors have claimed that the franchise will center on a much younger version of the characters than audiences are used to in an effort to differentiate itself from Craig’s era, as well as making the setting more “retro.”
This has led toseveral new names emerging as frontrunnersfor the coveted role of James Bond. MCU star and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland is now said to be in the running, alongside the likes ofThe White Lotus, Citadel, andBridget Jones: Mad About the Boyactor Leo Woodall,BarbieandSAS Rogue Heroesstar Connor Swindell,The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’sHero Fiennes Tiffin,Heartstopperstar Kit Connor,Gladiator IIlead Paul Mescal, and Euphoria andSaltburnactor Jacob Elordi.
