Anthony Mackieis excited to see his Captain America team up with theX-Men, and the actor reveals that he has been a fan of one character since high school. Anthony Mackie’sCaptain America: Brave New Worldhas finally arrived for rental and purchase on PVOD, and the actor is currently set to begin filmingAvengers: Doomsday. The Marvel team-up will not only feature Sam Wilson’s newly formed Avengers but also theX-Menfrom the 20th Century Fox films, with many fan-favorite actors returning as their iconic characters.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Mackie was asked which X-Men character he is the most excited to team up with following theAvengers: Doomsdaycasting announcement. Mackie is excited for characterslike Beast, Professor X, and Nightcrawler, even saying he wants to take the teleporting mutant to Mardi Gras. However, Mackie revealed that his favorite is none other than Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, and that he has carried a Cyclops action figure on his keychain since high school. Mackie said:

John Boyega as Finn and Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron in Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker

John Boyega Is Open To Playing Fan-Favorite X-Men in the MCU

Kevin Feige approached John Boyega about joining the MCU, and the ‘Star Wars’ actor knows which character he would want to play.

“Look, I am a big Cyclops fan. That’s my favorite X-Men. I have a Cyclops action figure on my key chain that I’ve had since high school. When I was in high school, the X-Men cartoon was really big, and this was before the movies. I’ve always been a huge Cyclops fan, and I’m really, really excited - hopefully, knock on wood - for them to be a part of it and come into it. [I’m excited] to hang out with Xavier and Beast and all those guys. But my favorite is Nightcrawler. If I can hang out with one character? Me and Nightcrawler in the French Quarter during Mardi Gras for two weeks, that’s what I do.”

James Marsden as Cyclops from X-Men next to Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Comes With Some Great X-Pectations

Kevin Feige has already revealed thatAvengers: Doomsdaywill see the Avengers and X-Men teaming up to stop Doctor Doom, with assistance from The Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts*, and the Wakandans. However, many are also expecting a fight between the Avengers and the X-Men,similar to the iconic 2012 comic series “Avengers vs. X-Men.“In that comic, it sees a notable fight between Cyclops and Steve Rogers, Captain America, given that they are each the leader of their respective teams. The MCU may see a battle between Marsden’s Cyclops and Mackie’s Captain America, putting the vibranium shield to the test against Cyclops' optic blast.

Mackie’s comment about being a fan of the X-Men since the days ofX-Men: The Animated Seriesspeaks to the show’s popularity and how it cast a large shadow over theX-Menbrand. It certainly seems Marvel is steering into this as characters associated with that series, like Cyclops, Gambit, Beast, and Professor X, are major parts ofAvengers: Doomsday. This certainly lends credence to the idea that when more casting news is announced,Hugh Jackman’s Wolverineand Halle Berry’s Storm will be confirmed.

James Marsden’s announcement to be returning as Cyclops forAvengers: Doomsdaytook many by surprise. Despite Cyclops being a founding member of the X-Men team and easily one of the most iconic and beloved members in the comics, the live-action feature films truly undervalued the character by reducing his role inX2: X-Men Unitedand thenkilling him off quickly inX-Men: The Last Stand. Marvel Animation’sX-Men ‘97certainly did a lot to rehabilitate Cyclops’ image to audience members who might have only known the character from the movies. Hopefully, inAvengers: Doomsday, Marsden’s Cyclops will get the chance to shine.
