Ever since theAquamanmovie was first announced back in October 2014,Jason Momoahas been attached to play the title character. He is rumored to join the rest of hisJustice Leagueteam members at the end ofBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but we haven’t ever heard who else will be starring alongsideJason Momoain his stand alone movie. Today,The Hollywood Reporterreveals that actressAmber Heardis in talks to play the female lead, Mera.
The site reports that the actress will make herDC ComicsExtended Universe (DCEU) debut in next year’s Justice League Part 1, which is said to introduce a number of characters and story threads that will “fully launch” the DCEU. This news falls in line with a report from November, which revealed that Mera will first appear in Justice League Part 1 before moving over toAquaman. The character is described as the “Khaleesi of the sea,” borrowing a term from HBO’sGame of Thrones.
In theDC Comics, Mera hailed from Xebel, an underwater colony made of descendants of Atlantis separatists, who were exiled from the kingdom. Mera was originally sent by her people to kill Aquaman, but they ended up falling in love, and they sought to unite all of Atlantis through their marriage. Mera has most of the same powers asAquaman, but she also has what is known as aquakinesis, which allows her to manipulate water with her mind and create hard objects out of water, which can be used as weapons. Aquaman and Mera have also had a rocky relationship in the comics, with Mera turning against him on several occasions, forcing him to choose between her and their child.

The first is being written byKurt Johnstad(300: Rise of an Empire), with the second byDavid Leslie Johnson(Wrath of the Titans). Will Beall(Gangster Squad) was working on an earlier version, but it seems he isn’t involved anymore.
