How Speak No Evil Became a Divisive Remake

While many questioned the need for an American remake of a film that’s only a couple of years old, it’s clear thatSpeak No Evilhasmanaged to unite many critics and fans in their assessment of the movie. On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s certified fresh with a score of 83% from 191 reviews, while its audience score is holding steady at 85% from more than 1,000 verified ratings.

However, that isn’t to say that Watkins’ version is not without its detractors,as the movie has managed to divide viewers on social media, where many are questioning the watered-down ending that marks a significant change from the Danish original. Many began to cry foul when they realized that the Blumhouse film opted to deliver a conclusionthat original director Christian Tafdrup calls “happy,“instead of sticking with the more bleak ending of his European predecessor.

6 Biggest Changes the American Remake of Speak No Evil Makes to the Original Danish Horror Film

Skepticism is expected when a movie remake is announced. The new Speak No Evil is more of a reimagining, but what does it change from the original?

Still,Speak No EvilisBlumhouse’s highest grossing theatrical release of the year, generating $57.7 million dollars at the box office. While that’s a far cry from their 2023 successes such asM3GAN,Five Nights at Freddy’s, andInsidious: The Red Door– all of which managed to take in over $100 million – it at least puts the production company back on track leading into 2025, which promises to be a year filled with sequels that will aim to restore some of their tarnished reputation.
