That far surpasses the originalInside Out’s(2015) $90.4 million opening.
Dune: Part Two($82.5 million) andGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire($80 million) previously held the record for the two best opening weekends domestically in 2024, but neither of those titles were summer films. BothDune 2andThe New Empireopened back in March during the so-called Spring of Sequels.Kingdom of the Planet of the Apespreviously held this summer’s best opening-weekend take with $58.4 million, whileBad Boys: Ride or Dietook the silver medal with $56.5 million.

Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 original film, which starred a young girl named Riley with a head full of emotions. - literally. With Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, the all-star cast brought to life the emotions that adolescents face as they grow, change, and adapt to new situations. This sequel, currently in development, will bring Amy Pohler back as Joy, with Riley, now a teenager.
Inside Out 2also made $140 million internationally for a worldwide total of $295 million.Inside Out 2’sarrival also helped notch the biggest weekend total domestically of 2024 so far with $212.3 million. The previous best of $104.1 million was only achieved last week when the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-ledBad Boys 4dropped and ended up headlining only the second of three weekends to break the $100-million mark over the summertime.
