Another day, another little known action movie is blowing up on the streaming charts. This time,Prime Videois playing host toDominique,an explosive and well-reviewed, female-led action movie that will appeal to fans ofAtomic Blonde, Hanna, and the recent Netflix hit,Canary Black.
Clocking it at a lean 94 minutes,Dominiqueis a movie that doesn’t outstay its welcome, instead delivering a relentless, action-packed feature that mostly delivers on its promises and proved to be pleasing for the majority of critics and audiences. The film was given a limited theatrical release back in October 2024, but found itself buried by its arrival on the same weekend as the release of 23 other movies, including the comedySaturday Night, and the box office-slayingTerrifier 3. The film was released on VOD without much fanfare on the same day.
Dominiquestars Oksana Orlan, Alanna De La Rossa, Jose Conejo Martin, Maurice Compte, and Michael S. Ojeda, with Michael S. Ojeda directing. The synopsis of the movie reads:
“Dominique, a well-trained assassin, flees from her troubled past in an attempt to begin a new life in South America. However, when she crashes her plane in Colombia, she soon finds herself in a town plagued with violence and corruption. Facing brutal attacks from the police and mafia, Dominique must decide whether to protect herself or an innocent family that has taken her in.”
‘Dominique’ Delivered Surprisingly Good Reviews
Many action movies fall to complaints about overused tropes, predictable storylines, and sub-par acting from their cast.Dominiquemanages to avoid these gripes in the main, and while a score has not been generated on Rotten Tomatoes, six out of the nine submitted critical reviews are “fresh.” Equating to a 66% approval rate, this gives the movie an edge over several big star vehicles of recent years, many reviews actually make a specific note that he film is surprisingly not as predictable as expected.

While most audience reviews follow this same line, there are some who just can’t quite bond with the type of brutal and non-stop violence of action movies.Suren Tsaid in a 0.5/5 review, “Some superwoman destroys dozens of enemies in a matter of seconds. I had enough strength to watch only 10 minutes. then I turned on the second speed X2, but even at that speed I couldn’t get through five minutes.” However, there are many others who loved the action, if not the heartbreaking ending, such as Nathan, who wrote:
“Great action film with heart-felt moments. It was carefully thought through with the story and didnt leave plot holes that action films usually have. It was clever, well acted and directed, solid writing and it was shot beautifully. For an independent action film, I was pleased the entire film. I thought it was well worth watching.”
