Ever since being introduced in 2010’sIron Man 2,Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a.Black Widowhas been an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. Throughout the years, we’ve been given tiny snippets of her back story, with plenty of new details revealed in last summer’sAvengers: Age of Ultron, where we saw part of her training as a young girl in Russia, led byJulie Delpy’s mysterious Madame B. Today we have new details about a deleted scene that never got filmed inCaptain America: Civil War, that would have offered even more insight into Black Widow’s past.
A few months ago, adeleted scene animaticrevealed a moment between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow that didn’t make it into the movie. But this scene wasn’t filmed, as far as we know. MoviePilot has obtained a description of an earlier scene from the movie that surfaced in the “Junior Novelization” for the movie. Here, Natasha talks more about her brutal training as a child. Take a look at this novelization excerpt below.
“Natashastudied Cap’s expression of resolve. Finally, she said, ‘In Russia, in the Red Room, there were dozens of us. All girls, all young. We lived together. They let us be friends. Then they dropped us in the tundra, two weeks’ walk from home, with just enough supplies for one of us to survive.' Cap looked at her, understanding her meaning. ‘Don’t let them push us into the cold,’ she said.”
The site reports that novelization authors are often given early drafts of the script to work from, but we aren’t completely sure if this scene appeared like this in the early script drafts byChristopher MarkusandStephen McFeely, or why it was eventually cut. We also don’t know if we would have seen this scene of a young Natasha play out via flashbacks, or if Natasha would just tell this story to Steve, but either way, it would have added another layer to Black Widow’s intriguing origin story.
There was also a deleted scene inCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, whereRobert Redford’s Alexander Pierce mentions a “children’s ward,” hinting that Black Widow may have killed children during her work with the KGB. It’s worth noting that Marvel presidentKevin Feigerecently teased that they’re “committed” to making a Black Widow movie part of theirPhase 4lineup. Marvel hasn’t made any official announcements regarding Phase 4 quite yet, so stay tuned for more on the studio’s slate, and an upcoming Black Widow movie. Perhaps will see this backstory play out on the big screen yet.
