Marvel always has a few surprises up its sleeve during their annual Comic-Con appearance, and this year, they capped off their panel by officially announcing thatBrie Larsonis playing Carol Danvers, a.k.a.Captain Marvel.Captain Marveldoesn’t hit theaters until July 13, 2025, but directorsJoe RussoandAnthony Russohinted this summer that she could make her MCU debut inAvengers: Infinity War, which still hasn’t been confirmed yet. While promotingDoctor Strange,Kevin Feigeoffered some new details about this superhero, who will apparently be the most powerful in the MCU.
During an interview earlier this month,Kevin Feigemade it clear that thisCaptain Marvelmovie will be an origin story, although he wouldn’t divulge anyplot details. During an new interview withVulture, he teased thatCaptain Marvelwill be the strongest characer the MCU has ever seen, but she’ll also be quite flawed. Here’s whatKevin Feigehad to say.
“It’s very important to us that all of our heroes do not become silhouette-perfect cutout icons. All of the Marvel characters have flaws to them, all of them have a deep humanity to them. WithCaptain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far thestrongest characterwe’ve ever had. It’s important, then, to counterbalance that with someone who feels real. She needs to have a humanity to tap into, and Brie can do that.”
We reported in August that the director short list has been narrowed down to three female candidates,Niki Caro(Whale Rider),Lesli Linka Glatter(Mad Men) andLorene Scafaria(Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist). While the studio hasn’t announced a director quite yet,Kevin Feigesaid he expects to make a director’s announcement at the end of the year.
“Now, I expect to have adirectorby the end of the year. We’ve been meeting amazing filmmakers, but often the way we work, as was the case onDoctor Strangeand most of our movies, is that we have a … I don’t want to say a ‘road map,’ but we have a general view of what the movie is and then we meet with filmmakers and share that with them and then they pitch it back to us in a better fashion.”
Captain Marvelis being written byNicole Perlman(Guardians of the Galaxy) andMeg LeFauve(Inside Out). It isn’t known when production may begin onCaptain Marvel, and it still remains unclear whether or not this beloved character will turn up inAvengers: Infinity War. WithKevin Feigecontinuing his press tour forDoctor Strange, hopefully we’ll have more details soon.
