Art the Clown has become one of the most unexpected and shocking horror icons of modern cinema in theTerrifierfranchise. However, he was around long before he became the record-breaking masochistic killer audiences have come to love in his three movies, but a gut-wrenching moment involving actressCatherine Corcoranand a hacksaw turned him into one of the most unpredictable villains to have graced screens in years. Now, almost a decade after being murdered in the most brutal and graphic way possible, the actress has reflected on her part in making the unrated killer a worldwide phenomenon.
Corcoran is hosting the first episode of Shout! TV’sDouble Takeon March 21, which features two movies in honor of Women’s History Month, and ahead of that she spoke toComingSoonabout working on Damien Leonie’sTerriferand how it became something so much more than it was ever meant to be. She said:
“It’s always so crazy to me when people ask me what it means to solidify a slasher villain in Art the Clown because truthfully, when we were making Terrifier, we didn’t know what a behemoth it was gonna become. But Damien did say to me the night we were filming the hacksaw scene, he said to me, ‘Catherine, are you ready to make horror movie history?’ I looked at him, and I said, ‘You are full of s—. There is no way anyone’s going to watch this,’ and here we are.”

As Art the Clown, David Howard Thornton serves up the most menacing villains in the slasher genre, but that’s not all to the actor’s acting abilities.
Catherine Corcoran Feel Privileged to Be Part of Art’s Journey
While there are some people who would have serious doubts about being depicted completely naked and hacked in two by a maniacal clown, Corcoran knows that she was not just doing it for the fun of it. It took six years for Leonie to deliverTerrifier 2, but when he did the whole thing went stratospheric. WithTerrifier 3pushing both audiences’ nausea levelsand box office takings to new limits, the actress is well aware that she was part of something special back in 2016.
“It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It just becomes this behemoth of a thing. I think there is this special bond between myself, Damien, Jenna Kanell, Sam Scaffidi, and David Howard Thornton, that is just so special and so unique and so pure. Because unlike anyone else, who as wonderful as they are, has come into the franchise, we were just doing it for the love of the game. Gosh, what a privilege it is to take something that was made for $30,000 and it become this massive franchise. So I think if this is the iconic villain of this era, I’m really just privileged to have been part of the reason that was created. That’s really powerful.”
Leonie is currently working onTerrifier 4, which is expected to bring the franchise back down to Earth after a major supernatural leap during its last two movies, and it could also be the final chapter in Art’s story. For Corcoran, and everyone else involved, from the awesome Lauren LaVera, through Samantha Scaffidi, to Art himself, David Howard Thornton, it has been the journey of a lifetime…and it isn’t quite over yet.
