The movie industry is no stranger to off-the-wall concepts and stories, and outre filmmakers are used to throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks. Whether it’sThe Batmanstar Paul Dano playing the straight man to Daniel Radcliffe’s reanimated corpse-cum-life preserver (as in 2016’sSwiss Army Man), or Nicolas Cage desperately seeking his kidnapped pig (as in last year’s critically acclaimedPig), out-of-the-round pitches can work just as well as tried and tested formulas, as long as they hold the audience.

Time will tell if Elizabeth Banks' new film,Cocaine Bear, fits the bill. The movie, which is due for release by Universal early next year, is exactly what it sounds like – the tale of a black bear who gets high on cocaine in the wilderness. If you’re confused by the premise, you’re not the only one! Here’s what we know.

Cocaine Bear 2023

Cocaine Bear: The Plot

Under the impression that the titleCocaine Bearmight be metaphorical? Think again. This film tells the story of abear that finds and snorts cocaine. A lot of it. If it sounds like a comedy, the jokey vibes are alleviated by the revelation that such a circumstance did actually come to pass. In 1985, a drug dealer smuggling cocaine was flying over the southern United States when he jumped out of the plane with a number of parcels of cocaine strapped to his back. His parachute failed to open, and he died on impact.

However, it turned out that a separate duffel bag of cocaine had also been thrown out of the plane before it crashed. This bag was found in the middle of a Kentucky forest by a black bear, which promptly snorted most of it before dying of multiple organ failures.

Exactly how a character-driven thriller (for that is whatCocaine Bearis going to be) will get mileage out of such a crazy – and macabre – premise remains to be seen. Presumably, one thing the film will not be is boring.
