A solid cast is coming together forAlone Today, a crime drama from director Wendy Wilkins. PerDeadline, the movie will starDanny Trejo(Machete,Sons of Anarchy), Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie,Violy Gets Grounded), and Frank Whaley (Pulp Fiction,Jack Ryan). Different Duck Films founder Rob Margolies (Bobcat Moretti) is producing.
Alone Todayis said to be inspired by true events. The movie tells the story of a woman (Shannon Elizabeth) in an abusive relationship with a dirty detective (Whaley) who is helping move sex trafficked girls coming over the Mexican Border. When attempting to save just one truck load before “disappearing forever” everything goes horribly wrong and she decides to take a different path.
Director Wendy Wilkins is a former law enforcement official and the author ofSex, Love & Cops: A Memoir of My Five Years as a Young Cop, a collection of real-life stories from her days as a police officer. This first-hand experience also led to Wilkins crafting a believable crime drama.
“As a former police officer, I wanted to write a film that portrayed a more authentic version of a woman who was also a police officer, not a stereotyped version, and to shine a light on domestic violence and that it could happen to anyone, regardless of your upbringing, job, and geography," Wilkins said. “The script, I believe, is grounded, realistic and an accurate portrayal of the characters as these are inspired by true life events.”
Margolies added, “The project is an interesting mesh of thrills and suspense. I look forward to working with Shannon.Alone Todaywill show her in a brand-new light. Shannon is excited to portray a multi-faceted woman that she said after reading the script ‘feels real to her’ and she is ‘thrilled to have a female director.'”
Just recently, Danny Trejo was highlighted ina clip from the new movieAmerican Sicario. That movie, directed by RJ Collins, is another crime darama that follows the rise and fall of the first American-born cartel boss in Mexico. It is also based on true events, inspired by the real-life story of Erik Vasquez, an American who excelled at crime until his eventual downfall. Showcasing just how versatile Trejo is, another recent role has him playing a talking dog, and he’s just as excellent in that role as he is in crime drama movies and shows.
Shannon Elizabeth is known for her breakout role in theAmerican Piemovies, though horror fans will also appreciate her fromJack Frost,Thirteen Ghosts, and theNight of the Demonsremake. She also had a large part in Kevin Smith’sJay and Silent Bob Strike Back, reprising that role in 2019 forJay and Silent Bob Reboot. As for Frank Whaley,Pulp Fictionfans will remember him sharing his breakfast from Big Kahuna Burger withSamuel L. Jackson’s Jules; his other recent roles includeHustlers,Wish Man, andJack Ryan.
Alone Todaywill start filming in Los Angeles this winter. An official release date has not yet been announced.
