Fans just can’t get enough ofDeadpool, which has taken in a whopping $235.3 million domestically and $491.8 million at the worldwidebox officesince its release on February 12. It’s possible that the Merc With the Mouth could be the first $1 billion hit of the year, but we still have a ways to go before its theatrical release will come to a close. Over the weekend, starsRyan ReynoldsandT.J. Millerreunited in character asDeadpooland Weasel for a hilarious video entitled “DearDeadpool.” This three-minute video was posted onRyan Reynolds' Facebookpage, and it will surely tide you over until the next time you see this movie in theaters.
The video is set inDeadpool’s run-down apartment, with Weasel asking a variety of different questions from the Merc’s fans. Unfortunately, he gives completely wrong answers for all of these queries, which starts to frustrate Weasel. If you look closely, there are also three very quick subliminal scenes, at the 1:04, 1:36 and 2:04 marks, which feature bothRyan ReynoldsandMorena Baccarinengaging in some bedroom activities from the movie. We can only hope that these “DearDeadpool” videos become a regular fixture onRyan Reynolds' social media pages.
After receiving a slew ofpositive reviews,Deadpools $135 million opening weekend shattered the record for highest grossing R-rated opening weekend of $91.7 million, held for 13 years byThe Matrix Reloaded. It also brokeFifty Shades of Grey’s February record of $85.1 million, along with its four-day President’s Day weekend record ($93 million), the record for highest-grossing R-rated comic book adaptation (300, $70.8 million), largest winter opening weekend (American Sniper, $89.2 million) and it became the biggest opening ever for 20th Century Fox, surpassing 2005’sStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sithrecord of $108.4 million.
We reported earlier today thatDeadpoolis now the highest-grossingX-Menmovie of all time, after just 10 days in theaters. The movie was produced on just a $58 million budget, which is quite low for your average superhero movie. It’s also worth noting that, last month, early projections predicted the highly-anticipatedBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicewill earn $154 million on its opening weekend, and that’s with a PG-13 rating and two of the most beloved heroes on the planet featured in the same movie. Obviously, those numbers could, and most likely will, change, especially sinceDeadpool’s early projections put it between $55 million and $60 million. Still, forDeadpoolto earn so much with the restrictive R rating, opening higher than all of the otherX-Menmovies, it could provide a wake-up call to studios that may lead to more R-rated fare.
It was recently confirmed that originalDeadpoolwritersRhett ReeseandPaul Wernickare coming back to writeDeadpool 2. While the studio hasn’t officially confirmed the sequel yet, or a release date,Ryan Reynoldsappeared in an end credits sequence where he confirmed that the iconic comic book character Cable will show up in the sequel.Ryan Reynoldswill most certainly return as theMerc With the Mouthfor the sequel, but it isn’t known if any of the supporting cast will return. The cast also includesMorena Baccarin,Gina Carano,Ed Skrein,T.J. Miller,Brianna Hildebrand, Olesia Shewchuk, Style Dayne, Rachel Sheen and Dan Zachary. If the Cable character does in fact show up in the sequel, it could help set up theX-Forcemovie that 20th Century Fox has been developing. While we wait for more on the sequel, take a look at this “DearDeadpool” video below.
