Day 3 of CinemaCon closed out with Universal Pictures' two-hour presentation, which, like the studios before them, included plenty of news about their upcoming slate. The studio announced during their presentation thatSouth Parkco-creatorTrey Parkerhas come aboard to voice the newnew villainin their upcoming animated sequelDespicable Me 3. It was also announced thatDespicable MeandDespicable Me 2starSteve Carellwill return as Gru, but he will also be voicing a brand new character.
The studio revealed thatSteve Carellwill also be voicing Drew, Gru’s long-lost identical twin brother, who looks just like Gru, except for a full head of blond hair.Trey Parkerwill be voicing Balthazar Bratt, a former child star from the 1980s who is obsessed with the character he once played, and becomes Gru’s new nemesis. It hasn’t been confirmed if any of the otherDespicable MeandDespicable Me 2voice cast members, such asMiranda Cosgrove,Kristen Wiig, andBenjamin Bratt, will be returning for this animated follow-up.
No further plot details were revealed forDespicable Me 3, but Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, who directedDespicable MeandDespicable Me 2, are returning to the helm. They will be joined by co-directorEric Guilon, with Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio writing the script. It isn’t known when we may see the first look atDespicable Me 3, so stay tuned.
Universal has already issued a June 30, 2017release datefor theanimatedsequel, which will go up against Warner Bros.The Houseand Sony’sUncharted. Hopefully the studio will start announcing morecast membersin the near future, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted with the latest updates onDespicable Me 3. The first two movies were huge hits at thebox office, withDespicable Metaking in $543.1 million worldwide from a $69 million budget, andDespicable Me 2earning $970.7 million worldwide from a $76 million budget.
