Netflixhas released the first teaser trailer forDisenchantment. This marks the first new series from Matt Groening, legendary creator ofThe SimpsonsandFuturama, in 19 years. As the trailer points out, he’s shown us the present and the future, so the logical place for him to take us is to the past, and that’s exactly where we’re going. Beyond that, this is very much a teaser and doesn’t show us too much, but just the idea that Groening has a new show coming out very soon that we’ll be able to binge is exciting enough.
The teaser starts with a sprawling shot descending down from the clouds, eventually coming upon an enchanted kingdom. We see a cloaked figure being brought before the king of this land who is then unmasked, with a little twist thrown in there, and that’s about it. Fans of Matt Groening’s previous work will appreciate the familiar voice over, reminiscent ofFuturama, coming from legendary voice actor Maurice LaMarche, who returns as part of the ensemble voice cast forDisenchantment.
Disenchantmentis a 10-episode adult animated comedy fantasy series, which launches on Netflix, August 17. In the new series, viewers will be whisked away to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools. Unfortunately, this trailer doesn’t give us much of a look at most of these characters, but in good time.
The voice cast for the series includes Abbi Jacobson as Bean, Nat Faxon as Elfo and Eric Andre as Luci. A host of Matt Groening regulars will also be along for the ride including John DiMaggio, Billy West, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery. It hasn’t been announced how many of these voice actors will portray, but we can hear DiMaggio in the trailer. Netflix tends to go heavier on promotion right before a new title releases, so we should expect to see a full, more revealing trailer for the series in late July. This feels like something that could very well be showcased at San Diego Comic-Con this year.
The last time Matt Groening debuted a new series it was whenFuturamafirst aired on Fox in 1999. Though the series went through several cancellations and revivals, it’s highly regarded by many and there are still those who would like to see a revival. Point being, even though it’s been nearly two decades, the last time this man brought us something new it turned out to be pretty great. We can only hope this works out even half as well.
