Javier Bardem is reportedly in talks to take on the role of King Triton in Disney’s upcomingThe Little Mermaidremake. It was recently announced that Halle Bailey will be playing Ariel and Harry Styles is reportedly in talks to portray Prince Eric. It looks like Disney is starting to move quick in getting another remake off of the ground after the success of this year’sAladdinandThe Lion Kingremake, which opens this week and is expected to do some major box office business.
Sources close to the project sayJavier Bardemis currently in negotiations to playKing Triton. The same sources also claim the movie will focus a lot on Ariel’s mother, though that has yet to be confirmed. Disney is reportedly looking for an actress to play the mother role inThe Little Mermaidremake. Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina are also in talks to star and voice Ursula the Sea Witch, Flounder, and Scuttle the Seagull, respectfully.
The Little Mermaidis one ofDisney’s most beloved propertiesand hype for the movie is going to be off the charts. As for the current and previously released remakes, they have all been pretty divisive, while being able to kill it at the box office, save for Tim Burton’sDumbo.Aladdinwas torched by fans before the movie even hit theaters, but is currently on its way to joining the $1 billion club. It’s currently the third highest grossing movie of the year internationally and domestically. The Lion Kingmay even go ahead to become an even greater success.
Rob Marshall is set to directThe Little Mermaidremake after taking onMary Poppins Returns. While many are very pleased to hear that Halle Bailey was chosen to play Ariel, there has been backlash from trolls online who are against the idea of a woman of color taking on the role. The same thing popped up when it was rumoredZendaya was going to be playing Arielin the remake. For the most part, Disney fans are very excited to see what Marshall is going to be able to do with the famous story.
The Little Mermaidremake will more than likely rely on some heavy lifting in the CGI department to capture the underwater world of Atlantica. James Wan was able to do an impressive job withAquaman, so Disney might be looking to Wan and crew to see how they created such a detailed and beautiful set through the use of technology. Or, the studio will go ahead to blaze its own trail, much like what Jon Favreau has done withThe Lion Kingremake. Regardless, it will probably look amazing when all is said and done. The Dis Insideris responsible for the Javier BardemLittle Mermaidcasting report.
