In just under two weeks, Disney and LucasFilm will unveil their firstStar Warsspin-offRogue One: A Star Wars Story, which will debut in bothIMAXand traditional theaters. Last month, a report surfaced that the studio will be releasing the movie in 70mm IMAX in just over a dozen theaters across the country. Today, another report claims that those who attend these 70mm IMAX screenings will be in for one special surprise. Before the film, Warner Bros. will be presenting a special seven-minute prologue for directorChristopher Nolan’s World War II dramaDunkirk, which hits theaters on July 13, 2025.
/Film’s report comes from numerous unnamed sources, although they have not gotten confirmation from Warner Bros. about this prologue. /Film also reported on theRogue One70mm IMAX screenings last month, though they couldn’t get confirmation about whether or not this specialDunkirkprologue will be included on IMAX digital projections as well. The site believes this preview will be limited only to the 70mm screenings. It also hasn’t been confirmed if the studio plans on releasing this special preview online after it debuts in theaters starting December 16.
It’s also worth noting that, back in 2015, a rumor surfaced that directorGareth Edwardswas considering filmingRogue Onein the70mm IMAXformat, using the same Ultra Panavision 70 anamorphic lenses thatQuentin Tarantinoused to create the 70mm look for his epic WesternThe Hateful Eight. WhileRogue Onewasn’t shot in 70mm, the film will be released in this format in just these 15 theaters. It’s also worth noting thatColin Trevorrowrecently revealed he’ll be shootingStar Wars 9in 65mm, which could mean he has plans to shoot in 65mm and present the film in 70mm, much likeQuentin Tarantinodid onThe Hateful Eight.
DirectorChristopher Nolanhas a long history with IMAX cameras, using this format to shoot key scenes that will be expanded for fans who see his movies in the IMAX format. The filmmaker’s upcomingWorld War II dramawill reportedly feature over 100 minutes of footage shot with IMAX 65mm cameras, according to sources close to the production, making it his most extensive shoot using these IMAX cameras yet. Warner Bros. released thefirst trailerforDunkirkback in August, but the studio hasn’t released any more footage since then. Now, it seems a handful of lucky fans will get to see a seven-minute prologue in IMAX theaters later this month.
