Last month, while working in post-production on his upcoming sci-fi dramaChappie, directorNeill Blomkampshared a number of intriguing concept art illustrations on hisInstagrampage for anAlienmovie that he had in his head. While the illustrations featured original stars such asSigourney Weaver’s Ripley andMichael Biehn’s Hicks fromAliens, fans were disappointed to learn that they aren’t a part of any officialAliensequel. However, it seems that the movie may actually happen now, withNeill Blomkamprevealing in an interview withColliderthat 20th Century Fox is interested in making a movie based on his artwork and the story he created. Here’s what he had to say, when asked why he posted the artwork last month.

“There was a reason. I wanted to make that film. I still may make that film. [Laughs] It may happen. But I did it on my own time. Like whenChappiewas winding down in post and I had available time, I started to work on it. It was also from talking to Sigourney [Weaver] during the making of this. I mean, I asked her about Alien all the time. Alien and Aliens are my favorite films. So I genuinely wanted to make that film, I came up with the story, I came up with way more art than I put out and I never officially spoke to Fox about it, but Fox wanted to make it. So, I kind of touched on it and I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t know if I was just gonna go leave directing for a whole bunch of time and then I was like, ‘I might as well put some art out.’ But I may make it. I don’t know. That’s where it stands.”

In a separate interview withUproxx, the director was a bit more optimistic, stating there is “a high possibility” that the movie will happen at 20th Century Fox.

“There’s a high possibility, a high degree of chance that it happens that I go back and attempt to get Alien made.”

He also added that his original idea didn’t involve Ripley, but, during the production ofChappie, where he worked withSigourney Weaver, he began to include the actress.

“Speaking toSigourney Weaver, when we were doingChappie, she set off a bunch of thoughts in my head - I had come up with an idea that didn’t have Sigourney, it was a different idea. But I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy shit, that could actually be really interesting. When I came back to Vancouver, I had an entire year to work onChappie. And when I wasn’t needed in the edit, I could think about Alien. So, I basically developed an entire movie and I did all of this artwork as well.”

Unfortunately, the director would not divulge any details about the story, including why, in the artwork, Ripley is wearing a space jockey helmet.
