There’s a reason why we haven’t seenEmily Ratajkowskiin any new movies lately. The supermodel has previously appeared in movies likeGone Girl,We Are Your Friends, andI Feel Pretty. On the big screen, she was last seen in the 2019 movieLying and Stealingwith Theo James. MOre recently, she appeared as a special guest on the Showtime talk showSiwelast year, though she hasn’t taken on any new acting work on the big or small screens since prior to the pandemic.

Now, Ratajkowski is saying this is all intentional, per a new interview with theLos Angeles Times. She describes feeling disheartened about the Hollywood experience after taking part in several films, learning first-hand what it’s like to look for work in Tinseltown as an up-and-coming actress. She now feels that to go for big roles, she’d have to make herself vulnerable to “power dynamics and the power that is held by boys clubs.” Wanting to be taken seriously as a performer and not reduced to her looks, Ratajkowski says in the interview how she hired professionals to help her prove she was a “serious actress with longevity.” Work would come, but the supermodel always felt objectified by producers who couldn’t see past her appearance.

“I didn’t feel like, ‘Oh, I’m an artist performing and this is my outlet.’ I felt like a piece of meat who people were judging, saying, ‘Does she have anything else other than her [breasts]?’” she notes.
