Nearly nine years after it first hit theaters, Disney’s follow-up toEnchanted, titledDisenchaned, has finally found its director.HairsprayandRock of AgesdirectorAdam Shankmanis in talks to direct theEnchantedsequel, which the studio has been developing since 2010. OriginalEnchanedstarAmy Adamsis expected to reprise her role as princess Giselle. Although it isn’t known ifJames Marsdenor any of the other original cast members will be back forEnchanted 2.
The originalEnchantedcentered onAmy Adams' Giselle, who is set to marry her Prince Charming (James Marsden) before she is taken from her animated fantasy world and thrust into our real world in New York City. There she meets a lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) who is about to marry a woman (Idina Menzel) who is completely wrong for him.The Hollywood Reporterreveals thatDisenchantedwill take place 10 years after the original movie, following Giselle as she questions her “happily ever after” life, which triggers events that disrupt everyone’s lives in both the real world and the fantasy land of Andalasia.
Disney first started developingEnchanted 2in 2010, whenThe ProposaldirectorAnne Fletchercame aboard, taking over for originalEnchanteddirectorKevin Lima.The SmurfsandThe Smurfs 2writersJ. David StemandDavid N. Weisscame aboard to write the script in 2014, although it isn’t known if the studio has brought in other writers since then.Anne Fletcherwas still attached toEnchanted 2last year, when we reported that the sequel will now be entitledDisenchanted.
Disney is hoping to get production started onDisenchantednext summer, although the studio has not set a release date at this time. The original movie was abox office hit, taking in $127.8 million domestically and $340.4 million worldwide, from an $85 million budget. The original movie also starredSusan Sarandon,Julie Andrews,Timothy Spall,Rachel CoveyandJeff Bennett.
