DirectorShawn Levyis still holding out hope for aFree Guy 2. The sequel hasn’t received an official green light, despite the original film’s critical and financial success. In the film, the protagonist, Guy, lives in Free City, an open world video game where he is an NPC. Free City is filled with nonstop action and adventure. As Guy begins to understand his own existence and purpose, he actively works to save Free City from destruction by the game’s owner, Antwan (Taika Waititi).
In a recent interview withWired, Levy provided an update on the potential sequel, expressing his and Ryan Reynolds' enthusiasm for the project. While the sequel remains a “big maybe” at this stage, they both share a strong desire to see it come to fruition.

“It’s been floated, it floats, because Ryan and I love that movie. I’d say it’s a big maybe, but boy it would sure make us happy,” Levy said.
Free Guy 2: Shawn Levy Explains Why a Sequel Isn’t Happening Just Yet
The director of Free Guy is convinced that a sequel should only be given the green light if it “matches or tops the first film”.
Free Guy 2 Faces Creative Challenge Amidst Barbie’s Success
Free Guy 2focusing on the video game premise has the potential to present us with many wild storylines. The first film concludes on a positive note, with Millie, played by Jodie Comer, releasing Free Life. The open-world game features NPCs from Free City. Since Free Guy’s world is a game, the ideas and locations are seemingly limitless, enabling the creators to explore any direction they choose.
However, during a previous interview, Shawn Levy discussed thechallenges of developing the sequel. The success of Greta Gerwig’sBarbie, which shares thematic similarities withFree Guy, has added an unforeseen complexity to their sequel plans.

“I think it is definitely not assured. We love Free Guy and the love for Free Guy that has kind of resonated in aftershocks, if you will, in the last couple of years. That’s been thrilling to Ryan [Reynolds] and I. We are developing a sequel, but the truth is that you now have Barbie that has obviously left a mark about a character in a fictional world who comes to self-awareness. So, we’re only gonna make Free Guy 2 if it’s different than the first movie and if it’s different from other movies.”
Reynolds' stance onFree Guy 2is also far from definitive. While the idea of a sequel sounds appealing to him, he questioned the notion thatevery successful movie must have one. In his view, it’s essential to resist the urge to immediately embrace a sequel as a means of validation.
“There is the potential to do a sequel to Free Guy, which would be fun. I would love it. But also like, does everything fucking have to be a sequel? I don’t know. Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone go home. So you know, there’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one.’ No, the first movie validates the first one and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it.”
As discussions about the future ofFree Guy 2continue, the film’s fate remains up in the air.
