They’ll be there for you… on HBO Max, apparently. According to a new report, the cast and creators of the classic comedy seriesFriendsare planning a reunion special for HBO’s upcoming streaming service. As of now, the deal is not set in stone, but all six stars from the original series are said to be in talks to return for the planned special. Series creators David Krane and Marta Kauffman are also involved with the negotiations. The report also notes that if a deal is made, the issue would then be lining up all of the schedules of the talent involved, which could prove to be another challenge of its own.
As of now, HBO and producers Warner Bros. TV have declined to comment on the news. Reportedly, WarnerMedia Entertainment and direct-to-consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt has been the one leading the charge for theFriends reunion. All six cast members are reportedly interested as well, which echoesrecent comments from Jennifer Aniston about a secret projectinvolving her former TV co-stars. “We’re working on something,” Aniston vaguely teased at the end of October, stopping short of revealing any details about the project. The actress also suggested there wouldn’t be a full-on revival of the show, at least as an ongoing series, so a one-off TV special would coincide with Aniston’s comments.
Friendsfirst began airing on television in 1994, and by the end of its run in 2004 after ten seasons, it had become one of the most-watched sitcoms in television history. Following a group of young pals residing in New York, the series starred Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, Lisa Kudroa as Phoebe Buffay, Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing, and David Schwimmer as Ross Geller. One of the most well-known subplots of the show involved the messy romance between Rachel and Ross, and for better or for worse, a TV reunion special could reveal if the dysfunctional lovebirds ultimately stayed together.
Fans of ’90s sitcoms can also look forward to aFrasierseries revival, as Kelsey Grammer recently teased a Summer 2020 release date for the show. With other revivals likeWill & Grace,Full House, andRoseannefinding their own success on the small screen, perhaps theFriendsreunion was just a matter of time.
