Since HBO’s beloved seriesGame of Thronesis now essentially caught up with the first five books inGeorge R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series, the show’s producers have been extra-secretive about the forthcomingSeason 6. They didn’t reveal any new cast members during the show’s Comic Con panel this year, which had long been a tradition, and aside from a spate of rumors and casting reports, fans have very little to go on, as to what can be expected in the new season. Actress Diana Rigg, who plays Lady Olenna Tyrell onGame of Thrones, teased in an interview withDigital Spythat she will have an upcoming confrontation withLena Headey’s Cersei Lannister, while adding how she would like to share the screen withPeter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister.
“I’ve got a head-on with Cersei coming up and it’s really good. I haven’t had a scene withPeter [Dinklage], and I so admire him, he’s absolutely wonderful. Maybe I’ll have one in the future at some point. I’m sure he’d get the better of me!”
If you aren’t caught up withGame of Thronesthrough the end ofSeason 5, there will be SPOILERS below, so read on at your own risk. Diana Rigg joined the cast ofGame of ThronesinSeason 3, first arriving in Westeros after her granddaughter Margaery (Natalie Dormer) became engaged to King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson). It was later revealed inSeason 4that she helped Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aidan Gillen) murder Joffrey at his own wedding, although the Lannister’s haven’t been made aware of this treachery quite yet. It’s possible her involvement in Joffrey’s death could be revealed during this confrontation.
As for Cersei, she has never been too fond of Margaery either, and inSeason 5, she formed an alliance with the religious leader High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce), who had Margaery’s brother Loras (Finn Jones) arrested for his homosexual lifestyle. Margaery was also arrested for giving false testimony regarding her brother, and Cersei seemed to have the upper hand over the Tyrell’s, when her plan backfired. Cersei’s cousin Lancel Lannister, now one of the Sparrow’s, confessed his incestuous affair with Cersei to the High Sprrow, resulting in her arrest and humiliating punishment in front of everyone in King’s Landing.
Since Diana Rigg said this Cersei/Olenna confrontation is “coming up,” it seems that she hasn’t actually filmed it yet, so it remains to be seen when in the season it may take place. WhenSeason 5ended, both Loras and Margaery were still imprisoned, so it’s possible that Olenna could be sticking around in King’s Landing to try and free her grandchildren. Then again, she did try to bribe the High Sparrow into releasing them last season, and it didn’t work out so well. It was inferred last season that Baelish essentially helped set up Cersei’s arrest, so we’ll have to see how that affects her partnership with Olenna Tyrell moving forward.
This season will also bring back a slew of characters who haven’t been seen in quite some time.Bran Stark(Isaac Hempstead-Wright) is returning back after a one-season break. Brynden Tully, a.k.a. The Blackfish (Clive Russell), who hasn’t been seen since the Red Wedding at the end ofSeason 3, is also returning, along withGemma Whelanas Theon Greyjoy’s sister Yara. New characters includeIan McShanein an unspecified role,Pilou Asbæk, who has been rumored to be playing Euron Greyjoy, the uncle of Alfie Allen’s Theon Greyjoy andMax von Sydowas theThree-Eyed Raven.Richard E.
