FilmmakerGuillermo del Torotook to hisTwitterfeed today to announce his next project in development,Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. While the director didn’t confirm if he is taking the helm on this project, a report from Heat Vision Blog claims that he may potentially direct.Guillermo del Torois also producing alongsideSean Daniel, Jason Brown andElizabeth Grave.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Darkwas first acquired by CBS Films back in 2013, withSawscreenwritersMarcus DunstanandPatrick Meltonset to adapt the scary story collection.John August(Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) most recently came aboard to rewrite the script, but it isn’t known ifGuillermo del Torois working from earlier drafts, or starting over from scratch.
The project is based on the short story collection fromAlvin Schwartz, who compiled the stories from folklore and urban legend. The three-book children’s series began with 1981′sScary Stories to Tell in the Darkand continued with More Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark in 1984. Scary Stories 3: More Tales To Chill Your Bones was released in 1991. The books sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. The film will follow a group of outcast kids that face their fears to save their town after nightmares invade their lives.
The news comes just days after we reported that the filmmaker is boarding the gestatingremakeofFantastic Voyage. The director also recently clarified that his impending sequelPacific Rim 2is notdead, following rumors that the sequel wasindefinitely delayed. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see which of these projects moves forward first.
