Ever since theHellboysequelHellboy II: The Golden Armycame out in 2008, fans have been impatiently awaiting any sort of formal announcement onHellboy 3, which directorGuillermo del Toroand starRon Perlmanhave been trying to get off the ground. We haven’t heard any updates on the long-gestating sequel since last October, whenHellboysequelHellboy II: The Golden ArmystarJeffrey Tamborclaimed thatHellboy 3may still be happening. Of course, we haven’t heard anything about the project since, but directorGuillermo del Torooffered an update toThe Daily Beast, stating that the sequel will cost $120 million, which most studios aren’t eager to hand out.
“The hard fact is that the movie’s going to need about $120 million and there’s nobody knocking down our doors to give it to us. It’s a little beyond Kickstarter. It would be great to complete the trilogy. But in a way I don’t see the world-the industry-supporting that idea.”
One potential financier may be Legendary Pictures, whoGuillermo del Torosays may financially back the project if the director’s sequelPacific Rim 2, slated for release on June 23, 2025, is a bit hit at thebox office. Still, even ifPacific Rim 2does break the bank at the box office, andHellboy 3does move forward, that means we likely wouldn’t see it hit theaters until either 2019 or 2020. The director also added that he wants to make the movie soon, poking fun at 65-year-oldRon Perlman’s age.
“But you know, Ron is no spring chicken, so we’d better get to it before Hellboy has to do everything from a Barcalounger. I would watch that.”
Ron Perlmanrevealed in an interview last year that he will never stop trying to getHellboy 3made, “because the first two films were set up for this huge resolve and he (Guillermo del Toro) already understands what that resolve will look like.” The actor wouldn’t divulge any details regarding the story of this final installment, and it isn’t known if his co-starsSelma BlairandDoug Joneswill return for the sequel. Still, the mere mention ofHellboy 3gets longtime fans excited. WhenGuillermo del Toromentioned the title at last year’sComic-Con, the 6,500 fans in Hall H broke into riotous applause.
It isn’t known ifGuillermo del Torohas actually written a full script forHellboy 3yet, but it seems he already has the story well mapped out. The director’s next film,Crimson Peak, hits theaters this October, and he starts shootingPacific Rim 2sometime this fall. The director recently cleared some space in his schedule by dropping out ofDark Universe, but it isn’t known what he will shoot afterPacific Rim 2.
