Production is currently under way on 20th Century Fox’s long-awaited sequelIndependence Day 2, with shooting taking place in New Mexico. ActressVivica A. Foxreprises her role as Jasmine Dubrow from the 1996 classicIndependence Day, who revealed that shooting is taking place in New Mexico. While she wouldn’t divulge too much about the plot, the actress said the story takes place 15 years after the original, and that the aliens from the original are back.

“Independence Day 2is being shot in New Mexico. I just started my first week. We’ve gotJeff Goldblumcoming back,Bill Pullman,Judd Hirsch.Sela Wardis going to play the President.Liam Hemsworthis going to be in there as well. I just think thatIndependence Dayfans have been waiting such a very long for the sequel, that I’m glad we’re doing it. The aliens are back, and it’s about 15 years later, and it’s going to be amazing.”

In a separate interview, she revealed that, althoughWill Smithdidn’t come back as Stephen Hiller, he gave his blessing for the casting of young actorJessie Usher, who is playing Jasmine’s son, and has “all the qualities” that will remind fans ofWill Smith.

“I just started this week and walking back on that set and working withJeff GoldblumandRoland Emmerichthe director, it was like the first film was yesterday. We are so blessed that the audience has been so hungry for this sequel to happen. Unfortunately,Will Smithdecided that he didn’t want to come back. I’m working with a young up and coming actor namedJessie Usher, who has all the wonderful qualities that will remind you of Will but he’s playing my son. I’m glad that they choseJessie Usherand Will gave them his blessing when they cast him. So, we’re going to hold it down and the sci-fi audience are so faithful that I think the sequel will be successful.”

In the originalIndependence Day,Vivica A. Fox’s character Jasmine Dubrow was a stripper with a young son, who was datingWill Smith’s Stephen Hiller, an Air Force pilot. In the sequel, Jasmine has reinvented herself, with a whole new career.

“I will not be on the pole. She was a stripper with a heart of gold, and who had said that she was doing it because the money was good. Now she’s a hospital administrator and she’s running the hospital and I’m glad that they moved her character forward as a woman.”
