Jack Nicholsonmade a rare photo appearance in his daughter Lorraine Nicholson’s recent holiday Instagram post. The shot reportedly marks the legendary actor’s first public photo since early 2023, as perThe Hollywood Reporter.

Nicholson was last photographed in his happy place, courtside at a Los Angeles Lakers game he attended with his son. Nicholson has been a fixture at Lakers games for decades. TheEasy RiderandOne Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest actor now appears in a photo with his daughter Lorraine, who posted a carousel of Instagram holiday pics. Jack and Lorraine are seen together in the Instagram post below, captioned: “the giving season.”

The photo appears to have been taken at Nicholson’s home. On the bookshelf in the background, two of Jack’s Oscars can be seen along with several of the acclaimed actor’s accolades and family photos. Nicholson resides in a Mulholland Drive home in Beverly Hills. The actor bought the residence from a fellow Hollywood legend, Marlon Brando, in 2005. While there have been reports that Nicholson was following in Brando’s footsteps in becoming a recluse, those appear to be unfounded, as the 87-year-old actor looks great and happy in the photo with his daughter.

“That Sounds Like Jack,” An Illustrious Career Defined

Even if Jack Nicholson was becoming a recluse, it would weigh little on his iconic career. Nicholson got his foot in the Hollywood door at 13 when he scored an office job for famed animation directors William Hanna and Joseph Barbera at the MGM cartoon studio. His leading role film debut came in 1958’sThe Cry Baby Killer, produced by frequent collaborator Roger Corman.

Jack Nicholson is among several stars selected for a special honor by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

In 1967, Nicholson worked with Corman on the psychedelic film,The Trip, which starred Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. Nicholson would star alongside Fonda and Hopper in the 1969 counterculture-defining film,Easy Rider, a role that garnered him his first Oscar nomination. Nicholson was also nominated for an Academy Award for the 1974 noir film,Chinatown.

Perhaps the best film of Nicholson’s early career arrived in the form of1975’sOne Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,adapted from the novel penned by another counterculture icon, Ken Kesey. Nicholson won his first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Randle McMurphy inCuckoo’s Nest.

Nicholson delivered perhaps his most iconic role in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film,The Shining. However, he won his second Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1983’sTerms of Endearment, co-starring alongside Shirley MacLaine, Danny DeVito, Jeff Daniels, and John Lithgow. He also set the bar high for the portrayal of The Joker in Tim Burton’sBatman. Furthermore, he would win his third Academy Award for his role in 1997’sAs Good as It Gets.

Nicholson probably should have won his fourth Oscar for his brilliant performance in Martin Scorsese’s 2006 filmThe Departed. Meanwhile, his last film was 2010’sHow Do You Know, in which he starred alongside Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson. While Nicholson has turned down roles since then, in a November 2023 episode of Marc Maron’sWTF Podcastwith Nicholson’s longtime friend Lou Adler, Maron shared an anecdote.

“A friend of mine wanted to put him in a movie. And he had a conversation with him. But Jack says, ‘I don’t want to do it.’ He goes, ‘You know what I did today? I sat under a tree and I read a book.’”

Laughing, Adler responded, “That sounds like Jack.”
