Warning: This article may contain spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
The arrival ofGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3has broughtJames Gunn’s Marvel adventures to a close, and completed his trilogy of MCU movies in an emotional and franchise changing finale. While the story of the Guardians always seemed to have Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill aka Star-Lord as its driving force, the final installment has turned that on its head and rerouted the whole thing to focus on another character from the group; Rocket Raccoon.

However, even thoughGuardians 3is Rocket’s movie, there is still another important part of the story that needed to be told, and that is the relationship between Star-Lord and Gamora. Following the events ofAvengers: Infinity WarandAvengers: Endgame, the Gamora that had formed a romantic bond with Quill was gone, but cementing that bond between the pair was something Gunn cut from his second Guardians movie and had to verify happened inInfinity War.He revealed toThe New York Times:
“I begged them to have that kiss in [Infinity War], because it was necessary to really cement their relationship. I had a kiss in “Vol. 2” that I cut — it was awesome, but it came in a weird time. At the end of “Vol. 2,” you establish the fact that they have feelings for each other pretty distinctly, but in “Infinity War,” we needed to establish that they were now boyfriend-girlfriend and this was a normal thing for them. It wasn’t really about the kiss, it was about showing that they were now a couple.”

Is the Love Story of Gamora and Star-Lord Now Over?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3succeeds in giving every one of its characters their own ending, but also leaving them open for any of them to return in future projects. Naturally, that requires a number of things to happen, like the stars actually wanting to reprise their roles again and some have already made it clear that they feel they are done with the franchise now. This includesGamora actress Zoe Saldaña, who has suggested that she has played the part for the last time, meaning that those still hoping for that full Star-Lord/Gamora reunion are likely to be left disappointed. The actress recently said:
“I think the time has come for me to step down, and for the next generation to come forward. The one thing I would not want is for Gamora to go away. She’s been such an impactful character for fans and especially female fans, and young female fans. I mean, I signed up for one, and I got 10 years. Lucky me, man. I have no complaints. And I’m moving on.”
Of course, who knows what will happen in the future. There are certainly other opportunities for Gamora and all of the Guardians to return in some form, but it seems that there would have to be a strong story and real reason for them to reprise their roles again. For now, this Guardians of the Galaxy group has told their story, and it has been one incredible journey.
