Just a few weeks ago, directorJames Gunnbrought his cast ofGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2to Comic-Con to unveil thefirst footagefrom this superhero sequel, just weeks after production wrapped in Atlanta. While we still don’t know when (or if) that footage will be released online in the near future, it did confirm thatSylvester Stallonedoes have a mysterious role in this movie, while also unveiling the sequel’s biggest mystery, thatKurt Russellplays Ego, who is the father ofChris Pratt’sStar-Lord. Over the weekend, the director also shed light on another mystery swirling around this sequel, the presence of a new Infinity Stone.

In last year’sAvengers: Age of Ultron, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes finally learned about the Infinity Stones, although most viewers have known what they are all along. There are six Infinity Stones in total, four of which we’ve seen already, the Space Stone (The Tesseract), the Reality Stone (Aether), the Power Stone (Orb), and the Mind Stone (Loki’s scepter). There are still two left to be revealed beforeAvengers: Infinity War, the Soul Stone and the Time Stone, butJames Gunnconfirmed onFacebookthat we won’t see any Infinity Stones inGuardians 2. Here’s what the director had to say, in response to a fan question about the Infinity Stones' presence in his sequel.

“There will be no Infinity Stones in Vol. 2. I decide everything that happens inGotG. Other than that it’s in the hands of others. There will be infinity nothing. It’s a story about the GuarDian’s, and isn’t meant to lead to anything else.”

The last part of his statement was in response to a fan who asked if the Infinity Gauntlet will show up in the movie, but that won’t happen either. This news shouldn’t come as a surprise, since the director confirmed earlier this year that the Infinity Stones won’t be featured in his sequel, and also thatThanoswon’t make an appearance either. Aside from his brief post credit scene at the end ofThe Avengersin 2012, we have only seen Thanos in 2014’sGuardians of the Galaxy, where he was portrayed byJosh Brolin.

As for the Infinity Stones, there have been rumors thatDoctor Strangemay unveil the Time Stone, which could be the Eye of Agamotto, but that hasn’t been confirmed quite yet. Even if that report is true, we still don’t know when the Soul Stone will be introduced, but that could happen inThor: Ragnarok, which has been said to center on a “cosmic road trip” between Thor and Hulk. We’ll be sure to keep you posted with more updates on the Infinity Stones' presence in the MCU, andGuardians of the Galaxy 2, which is slated to hit theaters June 04, 2025.
