Jim Carreyin the 1990s was a force to be reckoned with. The decade gave fans some of Carrey’s best comedic works, includingAce Ventura: Pet Detective,Dumb and Dumber,The Cable Guy(which is kind of a comedy), andLiar Liar, along with more dramatic roles likeThe Truman ShowandMan on the Moon. Amid all of those movies, Carrey also starred in two comic book adaptations. His most popular was Joel Schumacher’sBatman Forever, in which he played The Riddler. But, Carrey also starred in an adaptation of a far lesser-known comic book,The Mask, and it’s recently gained a second life on streaming.

The Maskis currently streaming on Prime Video, and the film is the 10th most popular movie of the week.Viola Davis’G20still holds the top spot, withConclavesitting in second following the recent passing of Pope Francis, andThe Accountantis in third ahead of the sequel’s theatrical debut. Released in 1994,The Maskwas directed by Chuck Russell (A Nightmare on Elm Street). Alongside Carrey, the film also starred an up-and-coming Cameron Diaz, alongside the likes of Peter Riegert and Peter Greene.

‘The Mask’ Comic Book Is Far Darker

If you’ve seenThe Mask, you might have guessed it was based on a comic book given the hero’s zany powers. But, Mike Richardson’s series is so much darker, andvery different to Jim Carrey’s movie. In the comic, Stanley Ipkiss is just one of many people to become The Mask. In fact, each new person who wears the mask ends up killing the version that came before them. The 1994 movie took Ipkiss, who was a comparatively minor character in the comics, and created a whole new story based solely around his time as The Mask.

But, while Stanley was the hero of the movie, in the comics it was far different. The Maskcomic book series was incredibly violent, as Ipkiss' iteration of The Mask brutally murdered all of his enemies. But, The Mask didn’t just stop at his enemies. Across the first four issues, Ipkiss went on several homicidal rampages as The Mask, which led to him trying to flee the city before his death. As interesting as it would have been to see Jim Carrey in a comic book accurate version ofThe Mask, we’re glad the story was changed into the incredible comedy fans still enjoy to this day.
