Gilliam revealed his plan to cast Depp as the Devil himself while attending a screening of the documentariesLost in La ManchaandHe Dreams of Giants, both of which explore the director’s troubled attempt to makeThe Man Who Killed Don Quixote. The long-gestating, problematic project was eventually released in 2018 starring Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce.
As forCarnival at the End of Days, Gilliam revealed some insight into the plot, as well as Depp’s role as Satan.

“God wipes out humanity and the only character who wants to save them is Satan, and Johnny Depp plays Satan.”

Describing the project as a “comedy,” Gilliam continued to reveal more of what audiences can expect fromCarnival at the End of Days. And it certainly sounds like the perfect project for the filmmaker and Depp to collaborate on…
“This is a simple tale of God wiping out humanity for f—ing up his beautiful garden Earth. There’s only one character who’s trying to save humanity and that’s Satan, because without humanity he’s lost his job and he’s an eternal character and so to live without a job is terrible. So he finds some young people and he tries to convince God that these young people are the new Adam and Eve. God still gets to wipe out humanity. It’s a comedy.”

Johnny Depp Is Now Making a Cinematic Comeback
Jeanne du Barry
Jeanne du Barry is a historical drama that tells the story of the titular character who, on her journey out of the clutches of poverty, catches the eye of King Louis XV. Concealing her identity from him, Jeanne earns his favor, and the two fall in love, but upon moving to Versailles to deepen their relationship, scandal strikes France’s court.
Pirates of the Caribbeanstar Johnny Depp has, of course, been in the headlines a lot of late due to being embroiled in various legal battles with his ex-wife,Aquamanstar Amber Heard. Beginning back in 2019, the much-publicized Depp v. Heard trial saw Depp suing Heard for defamation over a December 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post.
Ultimately, the juryfound largely in favor of Depp, awarding the actor $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, while Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages and zero in punitive damages as a result of her counter-suit.
Depp is now slowly returning to screens, with the actorstarring as King of France Louis XVin director Maïwenn’sJeanne du Barry, which debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Depp is due to direct the biographical drama,Modì, about the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani and based on the play Modigliani by Dennis McIntyre.
No doubt reuniting with director Terry Gilliam onCarnival at the End of Dayswould be a major boon for Depp’s cinematic comeback.
