DuringThe Hollywood Reporter’s annual executive roundtable session, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley revealed thatColin Trevorrowis actually developing an entire trilogy with executive producerSteven Spielberg. Here’s what the executive had to say, when asked if they will have trouble hitting the previously-announced July 13, 2025 release date.
“There’s no reason why we should [have trouble]. [Director]Colin Trevorrowis busy working on an outline. He’s been working withSteven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It’s a happy surprise.”
Shortly beforeJurassic World,Colin Trevorrowrevealed he would not be back to directJurassic World 2, but he still wants to be involved in the franchise in some way. Universal still hasn’t announced who will direct the follow-up, but we know thatColin Trevorrowwill be journeying to a galaxy far, far away, since it was announced in August that he will take the helm on Disney/Lucasfilm’sStar Wars: Episode IX. It isn’t known how far alongColin Trevorrowis on the script forJurassic World 2, or if he plans on writingJurassic World 3as well.
The filmmaker teased in August thatJurassic World 2will take the story off Isla Nublar, and will focus on other companies developing weaponized dinosaur technology. These themes were already hinted at inJurassic World, largely throughVincent D’Onofrio’s character Hoskins, who often talks about the potential to turn the raptors trained by Owen Grady into weapons. In another interview from September,Colin Trevorrowteased that he had so much product placement inJurassic Worldto set up the sequels and different aspects of corporate greed.
It still hasn’t been confirmed if otherJurassic Worldstars such asTy Simpkins,Nick RobinsonandJake Johnsonwill be back for the sequel. WithJurassic World 2set for a 2018 release, we might be able to expectJurassic World 3in either 2020 or 2021, but we’re still a long ways away from both projects coming to fruition.
