While promotingKingsman: The Secret Serviceearlier this year, directorMatthew Vaughnrevealed that he wants to make a prequel to his 2010comic book adaptationofKick-Ass, which would center onChloe Moretz’s beloved characterHit-Girl. The filmmaker recently revealed his plans for the prequel and sequel, explaining that thisHit-Girl moviewill show how bothHit-Girland Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) came to be, which will hopefully generate enough interest to makeKick-Ass 3. Here’s what the filmmaker said in a Q&A session withYahoo! UK.
“We would like to dip our toe back into it,Mark (Millar)and I and the team. We’re working on an idea for a prequel of how didHit-Girland Big Daddy becomeHit-Girland Big Daddy. It’s quite a fun idea we’ve come up with. If we make that, hopefully that will be the sorbet for the people that didn’t likeKick-Ass 2and then we can go off and makeKick-Ass 3. I think we’ve got to do this prequel to regain the love that we had withKick-Ass.”
Kick-Asswasn’t a huge hit at thebox office, taking in just $96.1 million worldwide from a $30 million budget, while the 2013 follow-upKick-Ass 2only took in $60.7 million worldwide from a $28 million budget. In a separate interview, Mark Millar said that he has only had “informal chats” withMatthew Vaughnabout theHit-Girlprequel and Kick-Ass 3.
“There’s really nothing happening here in any official way. Matthew is talking about an idea we had forHit-Girlbut it’s just been a few informal chats and we haven’t discussedKick-Ass 3at all. We’re getting Superior together at the moment and Matthew is putting someKingsman 2sequel ideas together but Hit-Girl andKick-Assare not on our radar I’m afraid.”
The original Kick-Ass helped launch the burgeoning careers of bothAaron Taylor-Johnsonas the title character andChloe MoretzasHit-Girl, but it remains unclear if they would be willing to come back for the prequel or sequel projects.
