Games of ThronesstarLena Headeyhas landed her next starring role. Per Variety, she has just been cast as the lead character inThe Abandons, a Western series in the works at Netflix fromSons of AnarchycreatorKurt Sutter. It was back in 2021 when it wasfirst announcedthat the show was in development, though it wasn’t until November 2022 whenNetflix picked up the showfor a 10-episode order. It was also revealed that Sutter would serve as showrunner in addition to executive producing the series, though no casting announcements have yet been made up to this point.

According to the new report, Headey has been cast as Fiona, a “strong, devout matriarch who, unable to have her own children, took in four orphans to create her own family. Driven by a higher purpose – and a strong-willed Irish temper – her faith and love for her family trump all.”

The show’s official description as as follows: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law.”

Lena Headey Heads to Netflix for Her Newest Role

Headey is very well known for playing Cersei Lannister in every season ofGame of Thrones, a role that put her up for an Emmy on five separate years. She also starred as the titular character inTerminator: The Sarah Connor Chroniclesand more recently had voice roles in the showsRise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,Infinity Train, andMasters of the Universe: Revelation. Recent film roles includeGunpowder Milkshake,9 Bullets, andDC League of Super-Pets. She had a scene in last year’sThor: Love and Thunder, butthe scene was deletedand hasn’t been released.

The Abandonsis the first project from Kurt Sutter to debut on a streaming platform after previously developingSons of Anarchyand its spinoffMayans M.C.for television. The series is also the second collaboration between Sutter and Netflix, as he previously signed on to write and direct the horror filmThis Beastfor the streamer. WithThe Abandons, he’ll be showrunning and executive producing alongsie Stephen Surjik and Otto Bathurst.

The Abandonsdoesn’t yet have a premiere date set by Netflix.
