Our first look at the newBatgirlis here courtesy of the actress herself. Leslie Grace has shared an image of herself as the new Batgirl from the upcoming DC movie that will tell the superhero’s origin story. Grace shared the image onInstagramalongside a caption that was pulled straight fromBatgirl: Year One.
“I use their expectations against them. That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me,” Grace wrote. “And when their guard is down, and their pride is rising, let me kick their butts.”
The suit itself is a mix of old and new but most noteworthy is the similarities it has with the suit from the “Batgirl of Burnside” issue by Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher, Babs Tarr, and Maris Wicks.

When Is Batgirl Coming Out?
As of nowBatgirlis set to be released onHBO Maxin 2022 and will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Alongside Grace, it will also star Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Garfield Lynns/Firefly, and Jacob Scipio in an unknown role. There are rumors of other familiar characters set to appear in the film from the Batman universe but so far those are being kept a secret.
The screenplay was written byBirds of Prey’s Christina Hodson. She recently discussed howBatgirlwill explore a time when Barbara Gordon is coming to terms with who she is and what she is destined to become. This is the first time thatBatgirlhas appeared in a film since the 1997Batman and Robinmovie where Alicia Silverstone took on the role. Since thenBatgirlhas also been in several of the animated films over the years.
“What’s kind of funny about Barbara [Gordon] andBatgirlis that in this story, she’s discoveringBatgirlfor the first time,” Hodson has said of the film. “So she’s getting to explore a duality she’s always had in her personality, but it’s this whole new side of her personality, a side that’s more daring and slightly less normal side of her that we just get to have fun and play with.”
Grace also starred as Nina Rosario in the film In the Heights and this will be her first appearance in the DCEU. However, this is not the only appearance or version we will have ofBatgirl. 2022 will also seeBatgirlappearing in WB Games Montreal’sGotham Knights, where she will fight to save Gotham with Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood following the apparent death of Bruce Wayne/Batman. 2022 might just turn out to be the year of the bat with the release ofBatgirlandThe Batman.
