While we’ve heard plenty ofrumorsthatBen Affleckis directing, co-writing and starring in anUntitled Batman Reboottrilogy, that will supposedly kick off before the end of this decade, we haven’t heard anything about a second standalone Superman movie. That all changes today, though, in a big way. A new rumor has surfaced aboutMan of Steel 2. It looks like Warner Bros. has already decided on a director, and you’re going to love the choice.
George Miller, who created theMad Max franchiseand returned to direct this past summer’s well-receivedMad Max: Fury Roadis supposedly set to directMan of Steel 2. The news broke on the latest episode ofPopcorn Talk, and comes from a pretty reliable source. DirectorJon Schneppwas promoting his documentaryThe Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?when he let it slip. He’s had inside access to Warner Bros. and DC Comics in putting together his own movie about the failedTim BurtonandNicolas Cagesuperhero adventure.
Warner Bros. is reportedly so happy with the success ofMad Max: Fury Road, that they have decided to rewardGeorge Millerwith the job of directingMan of Steel 2. Anyone familiar with the director’s history will know that he already walked down this road once, and likeTim Burton, he, too, has a failedDC Comicssuperhero movie under his belt. Way back in 2007, he was all set to directJustice League Mortal, which had a release date of 2009. The cast was gathered, and shooting was set to begin, but it soon fell apart due to the writers' strike and other issues. The whole ordeal is set to be choncirled in the impending documentaryMiller’s Justice League Mortal. But that film is awaiting approval from Warner Bros. and DC.
Jon Schneppwas pretty confident in his claims thatGeorge Milleris directing theSupermansequelMan of Steel 2. This shouldn’t be viewed as an official confirmation though, and the studios have yet to weigh in.Man of Steelwas originally directed byZack Snyder. He was all set to directMan of Steel 2for release in 2015, but those plans changed as the sequel morphed intoBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which hits theaters spring 2016.Zack Snyderwill then directJustice League Part 1andJustice League Part 2, which, as you can see, doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for a Superman solo sequel.
At this time, Warner Bros. has not issued any official statement on what it plans to do with their standalone Batman and Superman franchises, though both characters are set to return inJustice League Part 1andJustice League Part 2. It isn’t known how their stories will splinter off. For the time being, the entire plot forBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicehasn’t even been revealed. It’s hard to know where Superman’s story could go from here.
We have the video whereJon Schneppmakes his comments. They come in around the 55:30 mark, so you have to wade through a lot of nonsense to get there. What do you think about this news? Is Warner Bros. and DC really planning to give us solo Superman and Batman movies before 2020? WillGeorge MillerdirectMan of Steel 2? Would you rather see a follow-up toMad Max: Fury Road? Let us know what you think?
