James Gunnhas responded to comments made byMargot Robbiein relation to her future asHarley Quinnin the new DCU. While Robbie suggested that her popular character is one that can be passed on to other actresses, Gunn jumped on hisThreadsaccount to give fans hope that theSuicide Squadstar could return as Harley in the future, or at least play some role in the DCU. Gunn said:
I haven’t talked to Margot about Harley for a long time. But I’d love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in Todd’s movie or the animated show/s)

This week, Robbie discussed the future of two of her most recognizable roles:BarbieandHarley Quinn. While one may immediately think ofBarbiewhen the actress is mentioned, given the film’s recent success, her appearances as the one-time girlfriend of DC’s Joker is one that is just as memorable for many fans. In 2016, she was introduced as Harley Quinn in David Ayer’sSuicide Squad, reprising the role for 2020’sBirds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)and 2021’sThe Suicide Squad. DC fans have long loved the complex DC villain, and Robbie’s iteration only propelled Harley Quinn’s popularity (and inspired endless Halloween costumes).
During a recent interview withVariety, Robbie opened up about a potential return as Harley Quinn:

“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”
While multiple actresses have voiced the character for animated films, animated shows (including Kaley Cuoco), and video games, and others have tackled the role for live-action television, Robbie was the first to star as Harley Quinn in a live-action film. Lady Gaga will become the second when she appears in the anticipatedJokersequelJoker: Folie à Deux.

Margot Robbie Says Barbie ‘Wasn’t Designed To Be a Trilogy’
Whether aBarbiesequel will transpire has been a hot topic of conversation since the film premiered. Along with starring as Stereotypical Barbie in Greta Gerwig’sBarbie, Robbie served as a producer on the film, so it’s only natural that Robbie be asked about the possibility of a follow-up film.
“It’s funny, that knee-jerk reaction in this day and age for everyone to immediately ask about a sequel. I don’t think it was like that 20 years ago. This wasn’t designed to be a trilogy,” she said.
Barbiegrossed over a billion dollarsat the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie in the studio’s history; it’s also the first movie directed solely by a woman to cross the $1 billion mark. The film’s success is far from over, as it’s expected to rack up accolades during awards season. That success, according to Robbie, was in part due to Gerwig putting everything into the film and finishing on “empty”:
“Everything went into ‘Barbie’ — and that’s how Greta works. She finishes every movie on empty, feeling like she could never make another movie because she put everything she had into that one. So I don’t know what it would take to fill that cup up again for her. Or for us. I think Warners would also agree. I don’t know what more could even look like. We want to make more films that have the effect that ‘Barbie’ has. I don’t know if it has to be ‘Barbie 2.’ Why can’t it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to dothat.”
Robbie most recently served as a producer forSaltburnand is set to produce numerous upcoming films, includingTank Girland Olivia Wilde’sNaughty. She is next due toreunite withBarbieco-star Ryan Goslingfor anOceans Elevenprequel.
