Last week, a report surfaced thatJohn Francis DaleyandJonathan M. Goldstein, who wrote and directed the upcomingVacationreboot, have signed on to write the screenplay for Sony andMarvel’s newSpider-Manreboot. The filmmakers were actually contenders to direct the superhero adventure, but that job went toJon Watts, whose festival favoriteCop Carhits theaters this August. The studios have yet to comment on the writers' hiring, but during an interview withNPR, they were finally able to confirm that they are, in fact, penning the newSpider-Manmovie. Here’s whatJohn Francis Daleyhad to say during the interview.
“We can finally acknowledge that. This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.”
Jonathan M. Goldsteinadded that they’ve been “saying ‘no comment’ for the last week,” and that they’re “thrilled” to land this coveted writing job. Before they both made their directing debut withVacation, they co-wrote the scripts for comedies such asHorrible Bosses,The Incredible Burt WonderstoneandCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.John Francis Daleythinks comedy is an important part of whoPeter Parkeris. Here’s what the writer had to say about the comedic nature ofSpider-Man
“He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he’s coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.”
Tom Hollandhas been set to star as the web slinger, withMarisa Tomeisaid to be the top choice to play Peter’s guardianAunt May. All we know about the story thus far is that Peter Parker will be in high school, already leading a double life as the superheroSpider-Man, as he tries to juggle his school work with fighting crime. The movie is said to be the first in a trilogy, with each movie taking place during one year of high school. It isn’t known yet who will serve as the villain in this new adventure, but Peter Parker will first be popping up in a completely different movie.
When Sony and Marvel made their deal for Spidey to come into the MCU, it was revealed that the beloved character will first appear in a Marvel movie, which isCaptain America: Civil War, currently shooting in Atlanta. It isn’t known how large of a roleSpider-Manwill have inCaptain America: Civil Waryet, butTom Hollandand the other finalists all tested for the role in Atlanta alongsideRobert Downey Jr.andChris Evans.Spider-Manwas featured in the Civil War comics, but it isn’t known how the story may or may not be altered for the movie adaptation.
Since the cast is coming together quite quickly, hopefully we’ll find out who the villain is soon. There have been several villains used in the first two incarnations ofSpider-Man, including Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Sandman, Electro and Rhino, just to name a few. It remains to be seen if any of these evil characters will come back, or if they will use a whole new set of evil-doers. Are you looking forward to the newSpider-Man? Will the third time finally be the charm for this superhero franchise?
