The Batmanestablished Robert Pattinson as “vengeance” incarnate in Gotham City, but Batman’s idea of justice will be torn apart in the upcoming sequel, according to director and co-writer,Matt Reeves. Released in 2022, Reeves’The Batmanfollowed Bruce Wayne in his second year of crime fighting in Gotham, having already built a relationship with Commissioner Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), and had a few run-ins with his soon-to-be rogue’s gallery, like the Joker (Barry Keoghan). While Batman had the physical skills to take down the Riddler (Paul Dano), his perspective on the crime wave plaguing Gotham City was tainted by his privileged upbringing. However, Reeves wants to delve deeper into Bruce Wayne’s narrow-minded perspective on justice inThe BatmanPart II.

Speaking toDigital Spy, Reeves teased what we can expect fromThe Batman Part II.“There’s a lot of unrest and there’s a lot of clamoring because of the revelations of what we find out at the end of the [first] movie,“he began. We’ve already seen how much Gotham City was affected by the Riddler’s plan in theincredible spin-off series,The Penguin. But that show removed Batman from the equation.Part IIwill delve deeper into the civil unrest, looking through Batman’s cowl.

Robert Pattinson as Batman and Jeffery Wright as Gordon

“There’s unrest in the streets to say, ‘Well, how could this be?’. The idea that this corruption extends as deep as it extends. In the first movie, Batman views things very simplistically, he sees things in black and white. What he can represent and how he can affect that.”

“As we enter into the next movie, there’s a lot more grey,“Reeves continued. The director explained that the “grey” doesn’t just include the general mood of Gotham’s citizens, but Batman’s own perspective on the city and justice. “How does Batman fit into that? Where do you fit? It’s not as clear as going, ‘Oh yeah, bad guy, I go after bad guys’. Andwhen things are in grey, it makes it very hard to be Batman,so this is part of the challenge as we enter it.”

Matt Reeves Says ‘The Batman Part II’ Is Even More Realistic

Matt Reeves' version of Gotham is one of the most realistic depictions of the DC Comics city on film, taking heavy inspiration from New York architecture. The film’s version of Bruce Wayne also stripped the character back from the musclebound version found inZack Snyder’s DCEU (played by Ben Affleck). But, Reeves says that still isn’t realistic enough.

Matt Reeves Shares Teasing Update on ‘The Batman - Part II’s Production at Golden Globes 2025

‘The Batman - Part II’ will be filming in 2025 despite recent release delays.

The director wants the realism ofThe Batmanuniverse to extend beyond its visual aesthetic. Following the Riddler’s terrorist attack, the citizens of Gotham City have turned against each other.“There’s a lot more division in the city. It’s a lot more like our world is now,“he said. Like the extremely divided political landscape of the modern world, Gotham City’s turmoil stems from a lack of open communication between the city’s leaders and its citizens, as they all ardently pick sides.“There’s a lot of turmoil because people are in their camps and they’re not communicating.”
