Just a few weeks after the first trailer forMission: Impossible - Falloutarrived, principal photography has finally wrapped on the highly-anticipated sequel, just five months before it hits theaters on July 27. While that may seem unusual, it’s worth noting that production was delayed for a significant amount of time afterTom Cruisebroke his ankle while performing a routine stunt last year. Here’s what director Christopher McQuarrie had to say in a brief statement on social media, while revealing that the main unit may be wrapped, but the “splinter unit” still has a stunt to shoot.
“3000 setups 13helicopters6 pregnancies 5 hiatuses 4 weeks of aerial photography 3 continents 2 winters 1 broken ankle. To the most amazing main unit on the planet, thank you for all of your hard work. That’s a wrap. Splinter unit, mount up. Time to shoot the stunt.”
Unfortunately, the director didn’t offer any specifics regarding “the stunt,” but it’s possible that this could be the epic stunt that producer David Ellison teased last spring will feature Tom Cruise’s biggest stunt ever. When thefirst trailerwas released earlier this month during the Super Bowl, it featured a glimpse at an amazing helicopter sequence, which many presumed was the stunt Ellison was referring to. There was also a new preview that surfaced this month as well, that offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the stunt, which required Tom Cruise to go from complete beginner to expert helicopter pilot in a very short amount of time. Given the fact that this stuntChristopher McQuarriereferenced will basically be the last thing shot in the movie, it’s possible this could be the big stunt in question.
This movie has made some unorthodox headlines for a number of reasons during production, including Tom Cruise’s ankle break and alsoHenry Cavill’s mustache, of all things. Due to the extensive reshoots onJustice League, which happened after director Joss Whedon was forced to leave the production due to a family tragedy, Henry Cavill was forced to split his time between bothJustice LeagueandMission: Impossible Fallout, although there was one hairy complication: the actor’s mustache he was required to grow for hisFalloutrole. Since Paramount wouldn’t let him shave off the mustache for theJustice Leaguereshoots, Warner Bros. was forced to remove the mustache digitally, which many fans noticed whenJustice Leaguehit theaters.
Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill headline a cast ofMission: Impossible - Falloutthat also includes returning franchise stars such as Ving Rhames (Luther Stickell), Simon Pegg (Benji Dunn), Rebecca Ferguson (Ilsa Faust), Michelle Monaghan (Julia), Alec Baldwin (Alan Hunley) and Sean Harris (Solomon Lane). Newcomers to the franchise also include Angela Bassett and Vanessa Kirby, with director Christopher McQuarrie also making history as the first director to make twoMission: Impossiblemovies, working from his own screenplay.
