It’s been nearly four years since the finalTwilightmovie,The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, hit theaters, bringing the cinematic franchise to a close. There had been rumors that thevampire franchisewould continue on the big screen, but nothing has ever been confirmed. Today, it seems we’re no closer to seeing a newTwilightmovie than we were four years ago, but Lionsgate co-chairmanPatrick Wachsbergerrecently revealed it’s still “a possibility.”
The five-movie franchise earned a whopping $1.3 billion at thedomestic box officeand $3.3 billion worldwide. During an interview withScreen Daily,Patrick Wachsbergerrevealed that it’s certainly possible that this beloved franchise could continue in some way on the big screen. Here’s what he had to say below, revealing that it’s really up to authorStephenie Meyerregarding the franchise’s continuation.
“It’s a possibility. Not a certainty but it’s a possibility. It’s aboutStephenie Meyer. If she wants to tell a story related to those characters we’re here for her.”
Two years ago, we reported thatStephenie Meyerand starKristen Stewartwere serving as judges of ashort film contest. They would pick at least five aspiring female filmmakers to direct short films based on characters from theTwilightuniverse. As of now, that’s the closest we’ve heard about the franchise continuing, but it’s worth noting thatStephenie Meyerdid release the new novelLife and Death: Twilight Reimagined, a gender-swapped version of the originalTwilightstory, which was released on the 10th anniversary of the firstTwlightnovel’s publication.
There was also a rumor that surfaced four years ago that claimed a spin-off was in the works centering onJacob Black(Taylor Lautner) and his relationship with Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy), the daughter of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Even thoughThe Twilight Sagawas quite lucrative for Lionsgate, the studio hasn’t had the best luck with young adult franchises of late. After sagging box office receipts, we reported this summer that the finalDivergentmovie has been turned into a TV movie, which will launch a new spin-off TV series, developments which were confirmed byPatrick Wachsberger.
