Marvel unveiled the second trailer forInfinity Waron Friday, both online and on TV during the NCAA basketball tournament broadcast, which became the third-largest trailer launch in history. The secondAvengers: Infinity Wartrailer was watched a whopping 179 million times in its first 24 hours of release, behind the firstITtrailer (197 million views) and the firstAvengers: Infinity Wartrailer (230 million views). While it did fall short on the all-time charts, it set a new record for themost-viewed second trailer in history, easily beating the 128 million views forBeauty and the Beast’s second trailer last year.
It’s quite common for the second trailer for any movie to havefewer views than the first, even for a surefire blockbuster likeAvengers: Infinity War. There is no indication if Marvel plans on releasing a third full-length trailer between now and the April 27 release, although it seems unlikely. Still, the studio is likely preparing a barrage of TV spots and clips for release over the next month or so, giving fans more footage to look forward to, although it remains unclear when these clips and TV spots will arrive.
The 230 million views record may ultimately stand for awhile, at least until the first trailer forAvengers 4orStar Wars 9surfaces. It seems unlikely that a new trailer forSolo: A Star Wars Storywill be big enough to break the current record. It’s possible that there could be adark horse surprise, likeIT, which was not expected to set a new trailer record last year. Still, it seems likely that either the firstAvengers 4trailer, or the firstStar Wars 9trailer have the best shot at eclipsing the 230 million record set by the firstAvengers: Infinity Wartrailer.
The newAvengerssequel was already named as themost-anticipated movie of 2018in polls by IMDB and Fandango users late last year, and it’s possible that it could be the first non-Star Warsmovie in four years to be the top-grossing movie at the domestic box office. Still,Avengers: Infinity Waralso has to beat the impressiveBlack Pantherfor that title, which is currently at $607.2 million and is on track to become the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time, beatingThe Avengers' five-year record of $623.3 million. It wouldn’t be surprising ifAvengers: Infinity War, which features practically every character in the MCU, breaks this particular record as well when it hits theater on April 27.
Many fans are stillscratching their headsover Marvel’s decision to moveAvengers: Infinity Warfrom May 4, its traditional first weekend in May slot, the unofficial start of the summer movie season, to April 27, a weekend that is traditionally one of the worst of the year. Marvel has already proved it can open a movie in weekends that aren’t traditionally fit for blockbusters, withBlack Pantherdebuting with over $200 million in mid-February, but fans and analysts alike will certainly be watchingAvengers: Infinity War’s box office debut closely. The Hollywood Reporterbroke the news onAvengers: Inifnity War’s trailer view tally today.
