The Lord of the Rings Could Become a Star Wars-esque Franchise

Following the news that Warner Bros. Discovery is planning new movies and projects based withinThe Lord of the Ringsfranchise, it has since been reported that the studio hopes to follow in the footsteps of several major studios and is now “circling its wagons ever tighter around familiar IP” as it focusses on brands such as DC and“hopes to turn LOTR into a Star Wars-like franchise.”

This likely means that Warner Bros. Discoveryis planning a whole host of movies and other spinoffs based in the world of Middle-earth, withStar Warsof course consisting of three trilogies, the original, a prequel, and sequel, with an assortment of small screen projects now being released on Disney+ and expanding on the lore of a galaxy far, far away.

It has now been two decades since director Peter Jackson’sThe Lord of the Ringstrilogy came to its epic conclusion inThe Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Each installment was met with critical acclaim, ultimately winning 17 Academy Awards out of 30 total nominations. While some fans are understandably concerned, it is unlikely that the studio is planning to remake the likes ofThe Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, andThe Return of the King, and will instead aim to make prequels, sequels, and spinoffscentered on other, lesser-known characters as they squeeze every idea (and every cent) out of J.R.R. Tolkien’s richly detailed world.
