Deadpooldid a sly job of helping set up theX-MenspinoffNew Mutants. It introduced Negasonic Teenage Warhead as part of the team, and gave us a look at their uniforms without ever mentioning the Marvel outfit by name. While we don’t know whenThe New Mutantsmovie is coming, it is definitely in the works at 20th Century Fox. Over the weekend, co-writer and directorJosh Booneshowed off the cover page to the script. And he had this to say.

“Cover of a certain script @knatelee and I turned in last night to @simondavidkinberg #newmutants second draft.”

As you can see in theInstagrampost fromJosh Boone, Knate Lee co-wrote the script alongside the director. No story details have been revealed, but the movie has been called aYA version of X-Menwith a much younger cast. While it has never been confirmed, it is expected thatNegasonic Teenage Warheadwill return in the movie, withBrianna Hildebrandreprising her role fromDeadpool.

While 20th Century Fox has not announced anything official on the movie in the way of casting, it was widely reported last month thatGame of ThronesstarMaisie Williamshad joined the project. She is said to be playing Rahne Sinclair, theNew Mutantotherwise known as Wolfsbane. A shape-shifter, the character served as one of the more emotional key elements in the 80s version of the Marvel Comic. She is a Scottish werewolf who joins Xavier’s school for the gifted.

Anya Taylor-Joyis also said to have come aboardThe New Mutants. She made waves in this year’s instant horror classicThe Witch. She apparently made quite an impression on producers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler-Donner. She is rumored to be playing Illya Rasputin, theNew Mutantknown as Magik. She is the younger sister of Russian X-Man Colossus, who played a big role inDeadpool. A third casting addition is said to beAlexandra Shipp, who will be reprising her role as Storm from this June’sX-Men: Apocalypse. It has also been rumored thatSophie Turner’s Jean Grey,Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops andKodi Smit-McPhee’s Nightcrawler may appear in some capacity. It is believed that Cannonball, Sunspot, and Mirage are all currently being cast.Adan Cantoplayed Sunspot inX-Men: Days of Future Past, but this will be a younger version of the character. Cannonball and MIrage have never appeared in a live action movie.

If this is true, it meansThe New Mutantswill deliver the first team as introduced in the original comic books, created in 1982 by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod.James McAvoyis expected to return as Professor X, and is said to have quite a substantial role in the story. The New Mutantsdoesn’t currently have a release date, but it’s expected to arrive in 2018. 20th Century Fox did announce an untitled Marvel movie for October, 2017. But we don’t think this is it.
