The New Mutantsis currently undergoing reshoots andStranger ThingsstarCharlie Heatonis declaring that it will be a “full-fledged” horror movie set in theX-Menuniverse. However,New Mutantsdidn’t originally start that way, even if the first trailer led viewers to believe that it was. The new intense reshoots have pushed the film back almost a year and a half to completely reshape it into a horror movie, according to sources, and it seems that this will be the scariest thing to ever come out of theX-Menuniverse.

In a new interview, Charlie Heaton, who portrays Cannonball, confirmed thatNew Mutantsis going to be something pretty unique. The actor obviously can’t say much about the highly anticipated movie, but what he does say is very intriguing to say the least. Heaton goes on to say thatNew Mutantswill be the “scariest thing we’ve seen” in the comic book movie genre.

“It’s basically about these mutants in a facility for damaged mutants. It’s a story about these characters coming to grips with who they are and it’s a horrorX-Menmovie, which we haven’t seen before. I feel like, for anX-Menmovie, yeah, I think they’re going full-fledged horror. Without saying too much, I really don’t want to give away too much what it’s about, it’s very under wraps, but it is, in terms of anything we’ve seen in the X-Men world, it definitely is a horror film. It’s scarier than anything we’ve seen in that genre.”

The horror genre is doing big business lately after the massive success of Jordan Peele’s Academy Award WinningGet Outand Andres Muschietti’s big screen adaptation of Stephen King’sIT, which is the highest grossing horror movie in box office history. Additionally, John Krasinski’sA Quiet Placeis seeing surprise success at the box office after debuting at number one. So, takingNew Mutantsandfully embracing the horror elementscould be a pretty wise decision.

Director Kevin Smith recently spoke about the desire to see a horror-version of aBatmanmovie based off of the Arkham Asylum storyline, which could end up as a possibility ifNew Mutantsproves to be a success at the box office. The mixing of horror elements into comics is nothing new, but it has yet to be fully embraced on the big screen, though Sony’sVenomcould slide into that territory when it’s released this October.

New Mutantswillfinally hit theaters on March 22nd, 2019after having an original release date of Friday, April 13th, 2018, which would have been today. Fans have been waiting a long time to see the movie and the trailers looked very promising, so hopefully the reshoots will be able to sculpt the new narrative that they’ve decided to embrace. you may read more of what Charlie Heaton had to say about the horror elements inNew Mutantsover atEntertainment Weekly.
