Percy Jackson and the Olympianssecured a second season on Disney+, but a separateRick Riordanadaptation has been axed by the streamer. A film version of the author’s retro-futuristicDaughter of the Deephas been cut due to budgetary constraints. The New York Times bestseller saw its film rights secured just months after publication in late 2021, followed by script development. Despite there being a completed script by March 2023, Riordan recently announced the project’s cancelation at Disney+.

Mirroring the cancelation ofThe Kane Chroniclesadaptation on Netflix,Riordan shared the disappointing news aboutDaughter of the Deepthrough his website:

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

“Similarly, ‘Daughter of the Deep’rights have reverted to me after being in script development as a feature at Disney+. There was no issue with the script or the team. I loved everyone we were working with! It was simply a budgetary call, as I understand it, andDaughterwould be an expensive film to make. I know these kind of setbacks are disappointing to fans, but they are common in the film industry, and happen more times than not. Getting anything made, even in the best of times, is monstrously difficult. I have gained a lot of respect for the producers, executives and writers who manage to navigate the rapids and get projects through. I don’t know what the future holds forDaughter.I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

Set at Harding Pencroft Academy, a prestigious school training the next generation of marine scientists, explorers, and warriors, Daughter of the Deep follows Ana Dakkar, a freshman who lost her parents on a scientific expedition years prior. The novel is notably inspired by Jules Verne’s 20,000Leagues Under the Sea.

Rick Riordan Shares Update on Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Sophomore Season

Riordan also provided an update on the awaited second season ofPercy Jackson and the Olympians. Disney+renewed the critically revered series for a sophomore season in February. According to Riordan, who co-created the show alongside Jonathan E. Steinberg, the forthcoming season will begin filming this Fall. Of course, this may be upsetting news for fans of the popular series, as it indicates a lengthy wait before Percy Jackson is back on-screen.

“Sadly, I will not be doing an in-person tour for this book [Wrath of the Triple Goddess] in the fall. We anticipate being back at work producing season two ofPercy Jackson and the Olympiansby then, if all goes according to plan, and also, to be honest, I kind of want a breather from touring!”
