The cast of thethird Walking Dead TV serieson AMC continues to take shape, as two new names have been officially added to the project. Set to begin production in and around Richmond, Virginia next week, the spin-off has signed on Annet Mahendru (The Americans) and Aliyah Royale (The Red Line) to play series newcomers Huck and Iris, respectively. The two actresses join three others who’ve already been previously announced as a part of the series: Alexa Mansour (Unfriended: Dark Web) as Hope, Nicolas Cantu (The Amazing World of Gumball) as Elton, and Hal Cumpston (Bilched) as Silas.
The news was announced as part of the giantThe Walking Deadpanel held today atSan Diego Comic-Con. At this point, the show is tentatively set to premiere on AMC in Spring 2020, with its freshman season consisting of 10 episodes. This is the second spin-off ofThe Walking Dead, and won’t have any relation to the other shows in the franchise - at least not at the start. It’s co-created by former showrunner Scott M. Gimple and series writer Matt Negrete, the latter of which will also serve as the spin-off’s showrunner. Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Islandis directing. If we’re usingFear the Walking Deadas an example, we shouldn’t expect to see any immediate connections to either previousWalking Deadseries, although the door is always open for a crossover in the future if the show turns out to be successful.
The untitled thirdWalking Deadseries is described asa coming of age story set in the zombie apocalypse. This is why the main cast will consist primarily of younger actors, following the different ways younger people evolve when placed into this kind of world. As we’ve seen the end result of with characters on the other shows, some will become heroes while others become villains. In many ways, it will feel a bit different from howThe Walking DeadandFear the Walking Deadplayed out, as those shows focused more on entire families and how they’ve completely fractured as tragedies tore them apart.
Of course, thethird Walking Dead showis not the only new content we have to look forward to. AMC and Universal Pictures have also recently unveiled the teaser trailer for the firstWalking Deadmovie, which is planned to have a wide theatrical release. The movie will continue the story of Rick Grimes, whose time on the main series came to an end when actor Andrew Lincoln chose to move on. The character’s life was spared and merely relocated to explain his absence on the show, and he’ll apparently be given a proper ending once these movies make their way to the big screen.
Additionally, new episodes ofThe Walking Deadwill arrive on AMC in October, and the network has also renewedFear the Walking Deadfor Season 6. Even if the comic book series might have come to an end, AMC clearly doesn’t have plans to leave theWalking Deaduniverse anytime soon.
