M. Night Shyamalan’sUnbreakablecelebrates its 15th anniversary later this year. While the director certainly has lost some fans in that time, after a string of bombs such asThe Happening,The Last AirbenderandAfter Earth, one actor in particular wants to turnUnbreakableinto a trilogy, withM. Night Shyamalanback at the helm.Patton Oswaltrevealed toScreen Junkies, that, while he’s against making sequels just because a movie is successful, he thinksUnbreakabledeserves a tirlogy.
“As much as I’m philosophically against just spitting out sequels because something is successful, I do firmly believe thatM. Night Shyamalan’s filmUnbreakablenot only deserves a sequel, it deserves a trilogy.”
The actor then broke down his elaborate and detailed plan for two more sequels forUnbreakable.
“So, there are other Unbreakables in the world, and the second movie should be Bruce Willis embracing his hero status, starting to spread the gospel a little bit, but at the end of the second one, they should do the same thing as Empire. Things are not great. Either his kid gets hurt, who’s not unbreakable, or his wife leaves him or he gets one of these young unbreakables killed. Then in the third movie, keep in mind, the last frame of Unbreakable is Sam Jackson’s character smiling maniacally, going, ‘I know what I am now.’ And it says Elijah Price is in an institute for the criminally insane. Now, he’s been sitting there the whole time watching what he has wrought. He’s watching Bruce Willis' character, David Dunn, he knows what’s going on. If you’re studying how to build bombs, how to derail trains, how to blow up dams, you’ve met other super villain type people in the world. You have a network now, of people who can get you out, and so the third movie is him getting out. The first thing Elijah would do is make David Dunn seem like a villain, and Bruce Willis' character has to now fight to regain what’s actually good about himself and put down Elijah once and for all. And the other thing he would do in the third movie, and this is one element that was missing fromUnbreakable, maybe they cut it for time or whatever. In the movie, there’s a line where Sam Jackson says ‘My blood lacks a protein where I can’t heal or form strong bones.’ It would be interesting if, in the third movie, one of Sam Jackson’s plans is to capture David Dunn, and get a blood transfusion and become unbreakable himself, with his evil genius mind.”
Patton Oswaltadded that he would like to seeM. Night Shyamalanback to direct both of these sequels and, as it turns out, the director himself watchedPatton Oswalt’s video, revealing on his Twitter page that he may even flyPatton Oswaltout to his home city of Philadelphia to help him “crack” the sequel.
