A couple of days after Hollywood starGeorge Clooneyappeared on the CBS news program60 Minutesto promote his new Broadway show, President Donald Trump has responded to the actor via social media. Although Clooney did not exactly point fingers during his appearance on the CBS show, he did say that “governments don’t like the freedom of the press.” It appears thathe may have hit a nerve, and once again, Trump has expressed his disdain for the actor, calling him a “second rate movie star.”
As reported by Variety, Clooney is currently promoting the stage version ofGood Night, and Good Luck, his 2005 Academy Award-nominated movie starring David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow. The film portrays the journalist’s clash (usually broadcast live on television) against U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy in the times of McCarthyism, and the witch hunt that ensued when far too many Americans were accused of communism. The movie was co-written and directed by Clooney, who also snatched a Best Director nomination.

When promoting the play, Clooney appeared on60 Minutes, the CBS show that Trump is currently going against with a huge lawsuit of $10 billion. The president alleges that the network and the program tried to mislead voters. This is the situation that Clooney is probably referring to when he says, “ABC has just settled a lawsuit with the Trump administration. And CBS News is in the process … We’re seeing this idea of using government to scare or fine or use corporations—to make journalists smaller. Governments don’t like the freedom of the press. They never have. And that goes for whether you are a conservative or a liberal or whatever side you’re on. They don’t like the press.”

It didn’t take long for the president to put together a reply. It isn’t the first time Trump has publicly tried to portray Clooney as an enemy, as the actor participated in the New York Times piece where he asked Joe Biden to step down. At the time,Trump referred to him as a “fake movie actor.“Now, using Truth Social, he has responded to Clooney:
“Why would the now highly discredited 60 Minutes be doing a total ‘puff piece’ on George Clooney, a second rate movie star and failed political pundit? He fought hard for Sleepy Joe’s election and then, right after the Debate, dumped him like a dog. Later, I assume under orders from the Obama camp, pushed all out for ‘Kamala,’ only to soon realize that was not going to work out too well. 60 Minutes even fraudulently inserted Fake answers into her disastrous interview, aired just before Election Day, in one of the most embarrassing and dishonest events in broadcast history… And now George Clooney again? His press agent should be making a fortune!!!“b
